With Friday's college baseball action in the books, here's our inside look back at the highlights and lowlights from around the country.
TEAM OF THE DAY: Oregon
The Ducks are playing an outstanding brand of baseball. They made significant statements the last two weekends with series wins over Arizona State and UCLA, Now, they could very well be on their way to a road series win over Stanford. Oregon starting pitcher Alex Keudell struck out seven and allowed just a run on five hits in nine innings, as the Ducks captured a huge 4-2 extra-inning win over the Cardinal. While Keudell put together an outstanding pitching performance, J.J. Altobelli, Brett Thomas and Kyle Garlick each had two hits. Also worth noting, Stanford starting pitcher Mark Appel struck out 13 and allowed just a run on 10 hits in nine innings of work.
PLAYER OF THE DAY: Henry Sisson, lhp, Davidson
The Wildcats certainly haven't had a good season thus far, but the freshman left-handed pitcher gave them something to cheer about Friday in a 1-0 win over Wofford. Sisson tossed a no-hitter in the win over the Terriers. He struck out nine batters and walked just three in the complete game performance. The no-hitter was the first since Davidson's Wes Self tossed one in 2001 against High Point.
UPSET OF THE DAY: Seton Hall over Louisville
The Cardinals hit the road earlier this week and captured a dominant win over in-state rival Kentucky, but took a small step back on Friday with a 3-2 loss to Seton Hall. SHU starting pitcher Jon Prosinski did a tremendous job of keeping the Cardinals in check, allowing just two runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. Meanwhile, Louisville starting pitcher Justin Amlung struck out four and allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings of work. UL reliever Dace Kime tossed three scoreless innings, but the Cardinals simply were unable to get much going offensively, finishing the contest with nine runners left on base.
FIVE BEST
Arkansas (25-8): Razorbacks starting pitcher Ryne Stanek didn't have a great night, allowing six runs in 3 1/3 innings, but reliever Cade Lynch rose to the occasion as the Hogs defeated Kentucky 8-7. While Lynch led the charge on the mound, leadoff hitter and shortstop Tim Carver did the honors at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs.
Southern Mississippi (20-13): The Golden Eagles have struggled at times this season, but played exceptionally well on Friday night in a 1-0, 14-inning win over Central Florida. USM junior right-handed pitcher Andrew Pierce struck out 10 and allowed just five hits in nine innings of work, while freshman reliever Bradley Roney struck out five in five shutout innings. Interestingly, first baseman Blake Brown and catcher Chase Fowler each finished the game with two hits.
Clemson (20-15): Clemson is another team that has played a much better brand of baseball the past couple of weeks. The Tigers put together a very solid performance in a 7-6 win over N.C. State. Clemson outfielder Thomas Brittle went 4-for-7 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while stud third baseman Richie Shaffer went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Pitching-wise, reliever Scott Firth performed at a high level. He struck out four and allowed three runs on two hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. The Tigers improved to 9-7 in ACC play.
Arizona (24-9): After playing an iffy brand of baseball last week against Utah Valley and Utah, the Wildcats appeared to be back to normal Friday in a 4-3 win over UCLA. Wildcats starting pitcher Kurt Heyer allowed just three runs (two earned) on eight hits in a complete game performance. Meanwhile, at the plate, Joey Rickard, Alex Mejia, Robert Refsnyder and Seth Mejias-Brean each finished the contest with two hits. The Wildcats remain atop the Pac-12 standings.
North Carolina (25-9): The Tar Heels didn't play particularly well last weekend down at Miami, resulting in a series sweep. But this team appeared focused in a very impressive 2-1 extra-inning win over Virginia. UNC sophomore left-handed pitcher Kent Emanuel put together yet another impressive performance, striking out seven and allowing just one run on three hits in eight innings of work. Meanwhile, relievers R.C. Orlan and Michael Morin did their typical duties, each tossing perfect innings for the Heels.
FIVE DISAPPOINTMENTS
Mississippi State (21-13): It was an incredibly difficult night for the Bulldogs. State had a commanding 6-3 lead headed to the bottom of the eighth inning against South Carolina, but then everything fell apart and they dropped a disappointing 7-6 decision. The late-inning meltdown ruined a big-time performance from outfielder C.T. Bradford, who went 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs.
Texas (18-13): Should the Longhorns have any chance at all to get into the NCAA hosting discussion, which was slim entering the weekend to begin with, they better finish the weekend with a pair of wins over Oklahoma State. OSU starting pitcher Andrew Heaney mystified the UT offense, as the 'Horns dropped a 3-1 decision to the Cowboys. The loss spoiled a solid performance by UT starting pitcher Nathan Thornhill, who struck out five and allowed a run in 6 2/3 innings.
Santa Clara (18-13): The Broncos were one of the best stories in college baseball just a few weeks ago. Now, they're struggling once again to stay out of the West Coast Conference cellar. SCU starting pitcher Tommy Nance allowed just two runs on five hits in 7 1/3 innings of work, but that wasn't enough as his team dropped a 4-2 decision to a very solid Gonzaga club. Sitting at 1-6 in the WCC, the Broncos must find a way to win the final two games of the series.
Georgia Tech (20-15): Speaking of teams that can't seem to buy a break, how about the Yellow Jackets? Tech starting pitcher Buck Farmer struck out eight and allowed no earned runs (but four runs) on eight hits in six innings of work. Meanwhile, relievers Alex Cruz and Jonathan Roberts took care of business. However, the Jackets dropped a 4-2 decision to Wake Forest, as Demon Deacons starting pitcher Tim Cooney tossed nine shutout frames in the winning cause. The Jackets are in a major danger zone, sitting at 6-10 in the ACC.
Mississippi (23-12): It only was three weekends ago the Rebels were riding incredibly high after a home series win over Florida. Now, they're back in trouble, suffering another SEC series loss on Friday, as Georgia defeated them 6-3 to clinch the series win. Ole Miss starting pitcher R.J. Hively struggled, allowing five runs on seven hits in four innings, while the offense was unable to accomplish much against talented Georgia arms such as Alex Wood and Bryan Benzor. Wood struck out seven and allowed just three runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings.
