Purple (11) Highlights

Daniel Rios (2017 RHP, La Puente, CA): Rios went 4 innings for the Purple team, striking out an impressive 6 hitters in those 4 innings. He worked with a firm fastball in the 79-82 range, topping at 83 MPH. He complemented his fastball with a slider and change combo, both of which flashed swing-and-miss potential.

Jake Sim (2016 OF, San Diego, CA): Jake Sim closed out the game for the Purple team and showed flashes of impressive stuff. The well-built, highly athletic Sim showed a fastball in the 81-83 range, topping at 84, with natural heaviness and command to both sides of the plate. He also flashed a curveball with good spin and depth, showing feel for the pitch and throwing it both as a chase pitch and for a strike. Sim also showed very high potential with the bat, with a very smooth and balanced stroke with outstanding hand-eye coordination and plus potential power. Sim had a great day overall.

Daniel Ochoa (2017 2B, Chula Vista, CA): Ochoa had a monster day at the plate on Sunday, going 3-3 with 3 hard hit singles and scoring a run as well. Simple approach to hitting with quick hands to the zone and a solid path through the zone.

Reid Norberg (2017 3B, San Diego, CA): The highly projectable Norberg, with an athletic and lengthy frame that projects well, showed an advanced approach at the plate with the willingness and fluidity needed to drive the ball to all fields. He also had a very good day defensively at 3B, where his strong arm was accurate consistently and he made every play hit his way.

Justin Morris (2017 2B, Inglewood, CA): Morris had a pair of hits on Sunday, including an RBI triple in the 7th. Morris eventually came around to score that inning as well. He shows quick hands at the plate with good shift into contact and developing power.

Royal (13) Highlights

Casey Schmitt (2017 3B, Chula Vista, CA): Schmitt, the 2017 San Diego State commit, started on the mound for the Royal team, striking out 3 over 3 innings. He mostly used a FB in the 82-85 range, touching 86, with good life down in the zone. He also combined a curveball and a slider, both of which were effective in keeping the purple hitters off balance.

Ryan Orr (2016 C, Encinitas, CA): Orr closed the game out for the Royal team, using his uptempo and athletic delivery to pump 81-83 MPH fastballs right bye opposing hitters, and complementing his heater with a sharp CB in the 70-71 range. He picked up 2 strikeouts in that 10th inning. He also showed well with the bat, picking up a pair of singles in 3 at bats and showing overall advanced feel for hitting.

Sean Dunne (2016 RHP, Lakeside, CA): Dunne made his way into this blog for Saturday's performance as well, and he didn't slow down with the bat heading into Sunday either. Dunne collected two more hits in his 3 Sunday at bats, making him one of the most consistent hitters this weekend.

Quinn Hoffman (2016 SS, Del Mar, CA): Hoffman notched a pair of singles in his final two at bats on Sunday, closing out the day at 2-4. He showed willingness and ability to use the whole field and did a good job of battling in the box as well as showing good speed on the base paths.

Jason Moorman (2016 1B, Lakeside, CA): Jason Moorman absolutely raked this weekend, and closed out Sunday with a 3-3 day. He continued to show an impressive combination of hitting ability and power, doubling up the opposite field gap with authority and hitting two missiles for singles as well. He's a potentially high-end prospect as a hitter.
