Erik Nelson is a 2008 C with a 6'1'', 180 lb. frame from Edina, MN who attends Edina HS. He has a nice angular athletic build with some present strength. Nelson has very good speed and agility for a catcher and ran the 60 in 6.98. He threw 70 mph in drills with a best pop time of 2.12. He made accurate throws but his overall catching actions were raw, as if he hadn't spent much time behind the plate. He definitely has the athletic ability and raw tools to keep improving at the position. Offensively, Nelson has a busy set up at the plate with a long, very aggressive swing. His approach and strength give him nice bat speed and the ball comes off his bat hard on contact. His approach also leaves him off balance at times and affects his consistency and timing. Like his defense, the athletic ability and raw tools are there, they just need some refinement. Nelson is an outstanding student who should get a chance to further develop his game at the next level.
