College Top 25: March 18

Craig Cozart      Vincent Cervino
You would have to be fan of William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar to understand the full meaning of the warning “Beware the Ides of March”. To cut to the chase, the phrase, revolving around the date, March 15th had a dark and gloomy connotation. For fifteen of last week’s Top-25, that could seem particularly appropriate as they lost multiple games and 4 of them dropped out of the poll completely. In what had to be one of the most difficult polls to put together in the last several years, there was significant movement across the Top-25 and an interesting new look once the dust settled.

The No. 1 Arkansas Razorbacks (17-2) seemed to relish their seat atop the poll as they went 4-0 and only surrendered 1 run on the weekend. Oregon State (17-2) jumps two spots to No. 2 this week as they continue to win every series they play. Putting together some of the best ball in the country over the last couple weeks, No. 3 Vanderbilt (18-3) dismantled now No. 17 Auburn (13-6) and had a perfect week. No. 4 Clemson (16-2) went to Durham and cooled off the previously hottest team in the country No. 9 Duke (15-5) who had a losing week. No. 5 LSU (17-4) clings to the last spot in the Top-5 after a (3-2) week, losing their first series of the year at Mississippi State.

The No. 6 Florida Gators (12-7) made a statement by giving No. 7 Texas A&M (18-2) their first two losses of the year. No. 8 Florida State (18-0) is our biggest mover this week as they continue to take down everyone in their path. The No. 11 Alabama Crimson Tide (17-3) jump 10 spots on the heels of their huge home series victory over No. 12 Tennessee (18-3). Coastal Carolina (17-3) won their home series in dramatic walk-off fashion and leap to No. 14 in this week’s poll.

Making their season debut at No. 18, the Oklahoma Sooners (13-6) are undefeated in Big-12 play and swept No. 21 TCU (15-5) in Fort Worth. No. 20 UCSB (12-5) makes a return to the rankings after sweeping Long Beach State. Likewise, Kentucky (17-3) returns to the poll at No. 24 after winning all 3 games against Georgia and went (4-0) on the week. Southern Miss (14-6) rounds out the Top-25 at No. 25 as they had a perfect week and continue to play at a high level.
