LONG BEACH, Calif. – There’s an easy way to tell just how much premier pitching talent the Vanderbilt Commodores have stockpiled over the past few seasons.

Tyler Ferguson only logged 25 2/3 innings in 2013.

By now, there are certain details almost everyone knows about Vanderbilt. Yes, the ‘Dores have one of the top right-handed pitchers in the game in Tyler Beede, who likely will be a top five pick in this summer’s Major League Baseball draft. However, Ferguson and other younger players are gaining steam, well prepared to also etch their impact into the program.

Ferguson, though, is on the fast track after a rather uneventful freshman campaign. The Commodores started Beede and Jared Miller the first two games against Long Beach State opening weekend two weeks ago, while Ferguson occupied the No. 3 spot in the rotation. That was a stark contrast from where Ferguson was as a first-year pitcher last season, logging only eight appearances with four of them starts.

There was plenty of buzz in the air when Ferguson took the mound against the Dirtbags. After all, pitching coach Scott Brown and other Commodores coaching staff members spent much of the fall raving about the rising righty.
