It’s pretty amazing
The draft is over and the first big National Showcase event (PG National) will be held next week at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Home of the Twins) The talent will once again be the very best of the best in high school baseball, just like it has always been.
The Perfect Game National Showcase has a long history of producing many early picks in the draft as well as loading up many of the top college programs in the country with highest level talent. The 2006 showcase was amazing, but 2007 did not disappoint at all when it came to this year’s draft.
117 players who attended last year’s Perfect Game National Showcase were selected by Major League organizations in the 2008 draft. This included 24 of the first 100 picks and 38 in the first 10 rounds.
Of course, the draft is all about signability and many top players were drafted well below their projected slot. Some excellent prospects went undrafted due to the fact they had told clubs they were definitely headed to college. It will be very interesting to look at the 2011 draft when we will see many of these players getting selected very early.
The 2005 Perfect Game National was also loaded with talent. Many went undrafted or were drafted much lower than their talent dictated. This year in the 2008 draft there were 97 College players drafted, many very early, who had attended the 2005 Perfect Game National Showcase.
That means the 2008 draft saw 214 players selected who had attended the Perfect Game National Showcase. There are approximately 225 players who attend that event each year. Counting players from both college and high school 39 PG National players were picked in the first two rounds.
Here is the roster from last year’s PG National listing the colleges the players signed with and there overall draft pick number. Out of the 1164 drafted players who attended PG events, close to 20% of them came out of this single event.
