Daniel Chavez is a 2009 SS/P with a 6'2'', 170 lb. frame from San Mateo, CA who attends Serra HS. He has a lanky and wiry body type with plenty of room to continue to fill out. As Chavez gets bigger and stronger, expect his abilities to really start to emerge. We expect him to eventually catch up to and pass many of his age peers, especially on the mound, because of his projectability. Chavez is a good pitching prospect. He has an easy arm action and good arm speed. He works from an over the top slot. Chavez 81-85 mph fastball has good movement, sometimes sink and sometimes riding action. The ball comes out of his hand easily, indicating that he is going to continue to gain velocity as he gets stronger. He also has a big 64 mph curveball that he spins well and threw with feel. It would be good to see him throw it a little harder because it has a chance to be an out pitch. Offensively Chavez is an aggressive pull hitter with a promising swing. Defensively he showed some actions in the infield, with a nice first step and good hands. His future at the college level is on the mound and he could be a really good late bloomer.

Daniel Chavez is a 2009 SS/P with a 6'1'', 160 lb. frame from San Mateo CA, who attends Serra HS. He has a lean, wiry, lanky build with athletic proportions. There is some physical projectability with Chavez. He was listed as a primary SS and he did show well as a position player, he really shined on the mound. Chavez was a buzzsaw in his one inning. He has a quick and loose arm that works really easily from a hi 3/4 slot. His body control is good and there is some life in his body, though he does not run well. Chavez can pitch and frankly, he dealt in his one inning. His fastball (80-82) has late run and he located on both sides of the plate, mixing in and out. He really spins the curveball well and is able to start a lot of bats with that pitch and miss barrels with its late depth. He was fun to watch and it is exciting to consider how much better he will get, especially with physical gains. Offensively he has really good hands that he can fire. Chavez is a spray line drive hitter with an easy swing and good timing. His hands have life. Defensively he showed that easy arm and has a sling release. His throw have some carry. Consider him a follow prospect as a position player and a legitimate D1 pitching prospect.
