Dennis Waites is a 2009 RHP with a 6'3'', 180 lb. frame from Cypress, CA who attends Cypress HS. He has a lean and slender body type. Waites still looks quite young which lends even further to his physical projectability. Waites is a competitive pitcher and is not afraid to attack the strike zone. That will play really well for him as his raw stuff continues to develop. He pitches from a high 3/4 slot with a controlled arm stroke. Waites has pretty average arm speed but his arm works with little effort. As he gets stronger, he will throw harder. His 77-80 mph fastball has good movement, with sink and come back movement on the opposite arm side. He locates the fastball well. Waites also has a 69 mph curveball that has slider type spin (it might be a slider). It is not a big or hard breaking pitch but it is slippery and hitters did not square it up. On occasion Waites backed it up and hitters were locked up on it. His 75 mph changeup is also a solid pitch. Waites can pitch, has a really projectable build and all his stuff moves. Look for him to emerge as a strong D1 prospect next summer.
