Matthew McDaniel is a 2009 LHP/1B with a 6'2'', 180 lb. frame from Mililani HI, who attends Mid Pacific Institute. Selected as a Top '09 Prospect at this event. McDaniel has a lean, wiry strong build on an athletic frame. He should continue to fill out and add strength in the coming years. As a two-way player, McDaniel rates with the top players in the '09 class. He has a high ceiling both on the mound and as a hitter. On the mound he projects well, with a loose arm and athletic, well-timed delivery. His low-80s fastball has good sink and late action. He spins the curveball and slider well, with late action on both offerings. McDaniel has the ability to get in on right-hand hitters with both his fastball and breaking pitches, which is a good sign for a young left-handed pitcher. He attacks hitters and trusts his stuff, which will continue to get better. Offensively McDaniel is really exciting. His swing is alive, with a really quick bat and excellent hands. His trigger works well. McDaniel is able to keep his barrel in the zone, creating good barrel lag as his hands lead his swing, staying inside the ball all the way through contact. He slashes through the zone and hits the ball hard the opposite way. In time his power will develop and should play from the left centerfield gap to the right field foul line. He is a good student and very talented young player.
