2004 Sunshine East Showcase
Casey Karppe is a lanky and projectable 6'4", 2005 catcher from Kathleen, FL, who hits from the left side of the plate. We’re not sure who showed up for the workouts, but we saw two different Karppe’s in Fort Myers. The scout’s comments during workouts ran along the lines of "non-catching actions", "average high school bat speed", "stiff approach with no lower half", "drops shoulder trying to loft ball." The game comments were the polar opposite: "nice job behind the plate, works with pitchers well, good footwork", "hit to CF, hit solidly", "good sharp line drive hit", "hit a bomb off the RF fence, just missed it." Karppe hits from a wide stance and has a definite pull/loft approach at the plate, but he was all over the ball in games against live pitching. The game catching comments speak for themselves. This is a good young catching prospect with the opportunity to improve in the future. Keep a close eye on this kid, he can play the game.
