Cory Nelson is a 2008 1B/P with a 6'2'', 220 lb. frame from Portsmouth, VA who attends Alliance Christian HS. He has a big body with some present strength and also some softness in the middle. Nelson has a big, long power hitter's swing with an upper cut swing plane and good raw power potential. He made his best contact to the middle of the field. Nelson's mind set may be a bit too much on contact and not on using his strength to drive the ball hard. Nelson is a 8.30 runner in the 60 and will have to work hard on his quickness and agility to play first base as the game speeds up. Nelson also pitched and was effective on the mound. He has an extended mid 3/4's release from a rotational delivery and hides the ball well from the hitters. His fastball topped out at 81 mph. He threw his curveball and change up from the same release point and threw strikes with all his pitches.

Cory Nelson is a 2008 1B/RHP from Alliance Christian in Portsmouth, VA with a 6'1", 210 lb. frame. Cory has a thick build with good present strength. At the plate Cory has a line-drive swing plane with good strength in his swing. He has a tendency to reach for the ball and will need to work on getting his weight back. His swing will also get a little long and he needs to work on getting his hands inside the ball. At first base Cory has clean actions with good balance around the bag. Cory throws from a high 3/4 arm slot on the mound and makes hitters put the ball in play. He has a balanced delivery and is very simple in his mechanics. Cory should attract the attention of many smaller colleges in the next year.

Cory Nelson is a 6'2" 210 pound 2008 corner infielder and right handed pitcher from Portsmouth, Virginia who attends Alliance Christian High School. A right handed hitter, he has good hand strength and bat speed with good gap to gap power that will keep improving. Cory had some very nice swings in the game. In the field, Nelson handles himself very well around the bag at first base. He has good footwork and soft sure hands. He showed decent arm strength by throwing 72 mph across the infield. Cory also pitched during the event. His fastball topped out at 75 mph and his curveball at 68 mph. He has good command of both pitches. He keeps the ball around the plate and keeps the hitters off balance. Cory is young and strong and is still growing into his frame. He needs to have an eye kept on him. He is also a good student with a 3.5 gpa.
