Michael Nicholson is a 2005 wiry 6'0" infielder/pitcher from Exeter, NH, with a very good set of baseball skills that perform well on the field. He is very fundamentally sound across the board both offensively and defensively. Nicholson’s defensive tools are average, but he’s smooth and balanced and makes the plays. He took an excellent batting practice and showed an above average understanding of how to swing a wood bat and get the bat head to the ball quickly. He had a wide stance and good lower half involvement and a line drive swing that kept his hands inside the ball most of the time. Nicholson also threw four effective innings. He has nice, balanced mechanics and a loose arm along with three good pitches. Nicholson’s fastball topped out at 82 mph and he also threw a 72 mph change up that had excellent arm speed. Nicholson’s breaking ball was a 66-68 mph curveball and he did a good job mixing up all his pitches and throwing strikes. He should consider himself a pitching prospect at the lower college level as well as a position prospect in our opinion. We imagine he’s a well above average player for private school New Hampshire baseball and are glad he’s getting a taste of top regional exposure.
