4/16/12: Scouting directors and crosscheckers have been able to double up in Louisiana on potential first round picks Stryker Trahan at Acadiana High School and Gavin Cecchini at Barbe High School (the schools are approximately 70 miles apart straight down I-10) all spring, even seeing the two match up against each other a couple of times. While Cecchini is the early favorite to go off the board first in the middle of the first round, scouts seem pretty emphatic that there is just as much interest in Trahan. And while the two are very different personalities and athletes, they are close friends off the field. They have played together with the Texas Sun Devils organization since 2009, travel to regional and national showcases together and have both signed with Mississippi should they not turn pro this summer. Trahan’s looks and personality are polar opposites. He is an imposing physical specimen with a rock hard 6-foot-1, 215-pound build that he has had and maintained since his early teenage years. He’s not the kind of high school prospect that scouts need to physically project and would look completely in place walking onto Ole Miss football team as an outside linebacker. Talk to Trahan and watch him play and he comes off as almost quiet and shy. Scouts appreciate his effort and hustle on the field and work ethic off it. Trahan has three tools that grade out solidly in the plus range, including one that is highly unusual on a 215-pound catcher; speed. Trahan consistently runs around 6.6 in the 60 and has been down to 6.54 at the PG National Showcase last June. He’s a powerful, aggressive football-like runner on the bases and his speed has the potential to impact the game at the upper levels. Trahan’s power from the left side is another clear plus tool, although it’s a tool that Trahan still hasn’t learned to harness consistently in games. He puts on a world class display in batting practice, lining simple line drives 350-375 feet off fences on pure strength and bat speed and lofting the ball much further when he succeeds in lifting it. His 'epiphany' moment, and where Trahan rocketed up prospect list as a prospect, came at the 2011 Area Code Games. Trahan made the mental adjustment to staying back on the ball and letting it travel deeper and the results were spectacular. He drove numerous balls hard up the left centerfield alley early in the week (showing his speed in stretching a few to triples), the turned on a few balls with equal authority up the right centerfield alley later in the week. It was unmistakably a different swing approach and one that was a natural fit for his swing and tools. Trahan’s third clear plus tool is his raw arm strength. He’s thrown up to 85 mph/1.81 at showcases and his throws are on a line and true on the bag when his footwork is on target. However, Trahan’s overall defensive skills and tools as a catcher are one question scouts have in his overall package. Trahan obviously has the tools and athleticism to play the outfield and has played out there frequently with the Sun Devils during the summer. He might even grade out higher for scouts as a right fielder than as a catcher and some teams have said they aren’t concerned about his long term projection as a catcher because of that. If Trahan can stay behind the plate, though, it creates a very rare package of speed and power at that premium defensive spot. Either way, there is a very good chance that good friends Trahan and Cecchini will be calling each other the night of June 4 to exchange reactions to their good fortune.

Stryker Trahan is a 2012 C/1B/OF with a 6-1 215 lb. frame from Scott, LA who attends Acadiana HS. Extra strong athletic build. Quick feet and very good agility defensively, very accurate on line throws, can throw harder but sacrificing pure arm strength for quickness/accuracy, tends to snap at the ball with his glove at times. Left handed hitter, tall open stance, selective hitter, looking for a pitch to turn on and drive, very good raw bat speed, hits with confidence, gets out to his front side and tends to top spin balls. Runs exceptionally well for a catcher, 6.54, can also play the outfield and first base. Has top level physical tools in all areas, waiting for the skills to further develop. Good student, verbal commitment to Mississippi.

Extremely strong, physical build, has trimmed up and physically matured over the last year, looks good. Plus arm behind the plate, on line accurate throws, quick exchange, stays compact and under control, 1.89 best pop time, still working on receiving/blocking fundamentals but improving. 6.58 runner, can play all over the field athletically. Outstanding raw bat speed, gets coiled and loaded to swing, ball jumps off the barrel hard, looks to pull the ball, occasionally lacks ideal extension, wants a pitch to drive. Open stance, excellent bat speed, + strong hands, attacks ball aggressively, looks to pull and lift, big-time power for age, no problem with wood despite age.
