Matt Laney is a 6'4" 255 pound 2007 left handed pitcher and first baseman from Chester, Virginia who attends LC Bird High School. Physically, he was much more advanced than most kids at the event with his broad shoulders and large frame. Matt threw from a low 3/4 arm slot with good arm speed. His fastball was from 77-79 mph with good arm side run. His curveball was 61-64 mph with average life and his change up was 72-74 mph. He has a good mound presence and knows how to pitch with his excellent command making him very effective. Laney repeated his delivery very consistently and seems to be a fairly polished pitcher right now. At the plate, Matt showed good power with a simple swing that is very flat. He worked out well at first base with plus hands and feet and a top velocity of 70 mph. With some increase in his velocity sure to come, Matt should attract the attention of many recruiters. He is also a good student as well.

Matt Laney is a 2007 LHP from Richmond, Virginia, with a very projectable 6'4", 250 lb. frame. Matt was a pleasant surprise. At every event we meet players we have never seen before that will be impact type players and Matt fits the bill. Matt has very good balance in his delivery and shows a very clean, smooth, and easy arm action. His fastball topped out at 81 mph with good life and occasional sink. His curveball is a good pitch with good depth at 65 mph, and he showed exceptional control of the pitch. He has college control now, and can paint the corners with all of his pitches. His best pitch is a slider type breaking ball at 74 mph with very good run at the end. His change up has very good life as well. Matt worked out at first base and moves very well around the bag. At the plate he has a semi-long swing with a good coiling loading action. Matt has solid bat speed with a slight drift to the front side to contact. He does show very good power when he waits back on the ball. He has a big strong body, and with better timing, could hit for power. We feel Matt has a chance to be a top level type pitcher. With a strong body and very polished and smooth actions, he should continue to develop. We would not be surprised to see mid to upper 80s velocity in the near future..
