Mattson is a 6'5"-180 pound-2006 left-handed pitcher from La Mesa, California, who attends Grossmont High School. He is tall and lean with long arms and legs and has room to fill out. He has a very projectable pitcher's body. Mats has some herky jerky mechanics and throws across his body making him very deceptive to the hitter. He has a loose, quick arm which produces good movement on his fastball that tops out at 81 mph. Mattson's slurve has a short break, and he keeps it down in the zone making it tough for hitters to make solid contact. It is a deloping pitch, but he can spin the ball. He shows good command of his pitches and tends to stay away from the heart of the plate making hitters hit his pitch. His curveball tops out at 69 mph and his changeup at 64 mph. Mats shows good promise and will only get better when he grows into his body. He has very good upside.

Matt Mattson is a 2006 left handed pitcher from Grossmont HS in La Mesa, CA, with a 6'5", 180 lb. frame. He has a very good and projectable pitcher's body with room to add strength and enhance his present tools. Mattson has long arms and legs with an easy and balanced delivery, and shows the ability to hit his spots with consistency. He has a good feel for the strike zone and looked to have more fastball in him than he showed today. Mattson has good deception and shows some pitchability which caused hitters to swing and miss many pitches. He breezed through his two innings of play facing the minimum amount of hitters with two strikeouts and allowed only one hit. Mattson should be able to rack up some wins while pitching for one the more dominate programs in San Diego County. He has room for more muscle, and when it all comes together he could dominate at the next level. Offensively he hits from an upright stance with solid bat speed. Defensively he is a big target with good receiving skills at 1B and can help save some errors on bad throws. He has the potential to be a two-way player at the next level, but we like his chances better on the mound.
