(5/11/12): Undrafted in 2009 out of a Texas high school, Barnes was an immediate hit at Texas Tech. With a .341 average, 14 homers and 53 RBIs, he became the first freshman to ever lead the Red Raiders in hitting and was named the Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year. Though Barnes has never quite approached those numbers as a sophomore and this spring as a junior, his career has moved onward and upward since then, to a point where he was a serious candidate, entering the 2012 season, to go as early as the supplemental first round in this year’s draft. He may ultimately drop a round or two, however, as he has struggled to hit with as much authority in Big 12 games this season. He has had no such trouble at the plate, or in his general offensive approach, in non-conference games as he is hitting .333-8-47 with a 30-33 walk-to-strikeout ratio overall, along with 19 stolen bases in 20 attempts. Those numbers are more indicative of the way Barnes has performed throughout his three years at Texas Tech, and his righthanded power, patience at the plate and raw speed (50-of-56 in career steals) are all well-established attributes. Barnes normally has very fast hands and is capable of generating excellent bat speed, but it’s apparent that he has pressed this spring with the draft at hand, especially with the waves of scouts that have come by to scrutinize his every move. Additionally, as the primary run producer in a Texas Tech lineup that has been beset by injuries and is 28-24 overall, including just 6-15 in conference games, he has been burdened in trying to carry more than his share of the load. The remainder of Barnes’ tools have not been impacted. He is a solid player in all phases of the game, with 6.5-second speed in the 60 and sound skills defensively. After playing first base as a freshman, based on team need, Barnes has settled into center field the past two seasons for Texas Tech. His athleticism is readily apparent there, and his reads on fly balls continue to get better while his arm strength has also improved. A team that may still consider drafting Barnes as early as the sandwich round, or early in the second round, would have to believe in his raw tools, that he has the speed and instincts to remain in center field in the long run, and not have to move to a corner; and that his reduced numbers at the plate this spring is merely an aberration.
