SS Juan Carlos Portes: Portes commuted from Massachusetts a couple of times during the spring to play in the Iowa Spring League, so we’ve got a long look at him over the last few months. This young Dominican native is a ball player. Along with his defensive skills, above average arm strength (he hits 92 mph off the mound) and quickness, Portes has surprising power. He’s hit home runs at virtually every event he’s played in since last August…..ECPBBS (Wilmington), Jupiter, a couple of bombs during the Spring League and a shot to left field at the Pre-Draft off an 88 mph fastball. He’s a hard worker who loves to play baseball.

Portes is an “04” shortstop with MLB tools. At 5’11/180 he is very athletic and lean. He is much stronger than he looks. He runs very well and that’s probably his weakest tool. He ran a 6.8 on the slow track in Wareham. He has big league actions, good hands, quick feet and a cannon for an arm (throws 90 mph across the Inf.). He has very good range and uses his plus MLB arm to make the play in the hole. At the plate he has a professional approach and has no problem handling the wood bat. He has very quick strong hands and creates plus bat speed. He hits and hits with power, especially to the pull side. On the mound he topped out at 92 mph with a good breaking ball. Juan is just extremely talented.
