Jamaal Hawkins is a 2007 MIF from Sprayberry High School in Marietta, GA, with a 5'10'', 160 lb. frame. Hawkins is a lean and athletic player that ran a 7.05 sixty on a slow and wet track. Defensively he has nice footwork in the middle of the diamond with soft hands and good actions. He shows range to both sides and has great body control. He has a solid arm and makes online and accurate throws with a quick release. At the plate he is a right handed hitter who hits from an open stance with quiet hands and a good approach. Hawkins has a smooth and easy swing with a line drive swing plane. He stays inside the ball well with good bat speed, and hits the ball where it is pitched. Hawkins is an advanced hitter with college level tools. With his combination of offensive and defensive skills make him one of the top 2007 middle infield prospects. He is also a good student.

Hawkins is a live bodied sophomore infielder and very quick actions. He sort of resembles the Phillies Jimmy Rollins in some ways without Rollins blatant athleticism. Hawkins played some excellent defense in Fort Myers. He has very quick feet and hands in the field and smooth actions. Hawkins tends to flip the ball on his throws a bit and never really shows his true arm strength but his quick release is a plus. He definitely is a pure shortstop at this point. Offensively, Hawkins has the tools to be a productive hitter but is still inconsistent in his approach. He hits out of a somewhat closed, calm stance with a high hand set and good loading action. When he’s short and level to the ball Hawkins drills it up the middle or to right centerfield with authority. He will occasionally spin on the ball or try to lift it, which isn’t his offensive game. Hawkins is a good student.
