1/31/12: Piscotty was a surprise batting champion last summer in the Cape Cod League—not because he didn’t have the advanced hitting skills to warrant winning a title, but more because of the circumstances surrounding it. He finished at .349, a mere .0002 points ahead of Chatham’s Dane Phillips. Heading into the final day of the season, the race was thought to be between Phillips (then at Oklahoma State, now at NAIA Oklahoma City) and Orleans shortstop Matt Duffy (Long Beach State) as Phillips was at .355, Duffy at .354. But out of nowhere came Yarmouth-Dennis’ Piscotty. He was sitting at .327 with one game remaining and didn’t even have enough plate appearances to qualify, but went 4-for-5 on the final day, including a home run and double, in an 8-7 loss to Harwich. His big finish not only raised his average 22 points but his final at-bat enabled him to reach the minimum number of appearances. When both Phillips and Duffy faltered, the title was Piscotty’s—by the slimmest of margins. Piscotty was more than a deserving champion as he was the Pacific-10 Conference freshman of the year in 2010, the No. 1-rated prospect in the Alaska League that summer and hit a team-leading .364 as asophomore at Stanford. Moreover, he may have had the best approach to hitting of any player last summer in the Cape, along with some of the best pure hitting skills. In addition to his .349 average, he had three homers and 21 RBIs. He also stung the ball all four times up in the Cape League all-star game, getting two hits. With a simple, yet advanced approach at staying inside the ball consistently, Piscotty can handle any kind of pitch to any part of the strike zone, and never endured a slump all last spring and summer. He has more of a gap-to-gap approach now with the occasional home run, but his raw power potential should soon evolve naturally, especially since he has filled out his 6-foot-4 frame to a robust 215 pounds and has begun incorporating his lower half better in his swing. Piscotty homered just three times in 57 games as a sophomore at Stanford, even while serving effectively as the team’s cleanup hitter. He had four homers as a freshman. A tough out who has routinely put the ball in play, he has struck out just 45 times in two college seasons. Establishing a true position has been a bit more challenging for Piscotty. A shortstop in high school, he split his freshman season at Stanford almost equally between first base and left field, and then spent all of his sophomore year at third base. He has even pitched on occasion. The plan for Piscotty last summer on the Cape was to focus on playing primarily third base, but with a glut of third base-types on the roster, his versatility enabled him to play all over the diamond. He has the pure arm strength to stick at third in the long term as he was clocked as high as 93 mph in five brief pitching appearances for Yarmouth-Dennis, and appears to have the range and actions to play there. But Piscotty may still need to convince scouts that he has the raw power associated with the hot corner and can handle the position defensively over the course of a full season, especially after posting a subpar .890 fielding average for the Cardinal a year ago. If he can achieve those goals this spring on a talent-laden Stanford club, his superior hitting skills and raw power potential should push him solidly into the first round.
