Tony Smaldino is a 2008 2B/3B/P with a 5'10'', 165 lb. frame from Sonoma, CA, who attends Justin Siena High School. Smaldino has a compact body with present strength. Defensively he moves through ball well in the infield. He squares up to the ball and he gets in position. Smaldino makes the routine plays. He throws from a low arm slot, but still shows solid arm strength at 78 mph. At the plate he is a right handed hitter who hits from an average base with a high back elbow. He takes an aggressive swing, and he shows bat speed through the zone. He is a contact hitter who keeps his weight back. On the mound he throws from a 3/4 arm slot with a long arm circle on the back side. He has a simple delivery, and he works fast. Smaldino throws strikes, and he keeps the ball down in the zone. His fastball topped out at 78 mph with sink, and he mixed in a 68 mph curve and a 73 mph change. He has a plan on the mound, and he allowed only 1 hit in 2 innings.
