Hughes is a small middle infielder that showed some excellent defensive ability and speed. His speed can be a legitimate weapon if he uses it as we saw on the bases. He ran a 6.79 in the 60 and has short strides that allow him to round the bag quickly and make an impact on the bases. His glove showed very good with sure hands and lateral mobility. In fact, he caught our attention right off the bat in the skills with a diving catch on his backhand side, maybe the best pick in the workout. His swing was a good short and quick one that will play better with aluminum for his size right now but as he adds strength he will have another real good tool. His arm is the only thing keeping him at 2B. We think it would help to lower his arm angle slightly for playing up the middle. He will show quicker and more fluid actions without having to turn his body as much on his throws. Good student.
