Tommy Bates is a 2007 SS/2B/3B with a 6'0'', 170 lb. frame from Lighthouse Point FL, who attends Westminster Academy. He has a slender, wiry frame and developing strength. Bates moves very well on defense, with quick, gliding actions and good footwork. He shows soft hands to the ball but tends to field the ball off to the side whenever he can. He depends on his quick release as his arm strength is just playable at this point from the left side. Offensively, Bates is an effort hitter who takes an aggressive hack at the ball and generates some bat speed. His tends to collapse on his back side and hit from back on his heels but the ball jumps on contact and Bates' athletic ability enables him to square up on the ball more often than you would think he could. It's a raw all or nothing approach but it seems to work for Bates now, although he may have to make adjustments as the pitchers improve. Bates is an excellent student off the field.
