2005 South Top Prospect Showcase
Smith is a 6-1, 205 lb senior switch hitting infielder from Texas who profiles nicely at third base. He ran 7.31 in the 60, pretty good for a big young man, and threw 78 mph during infield drills. Smith played well defensively during the showcase games, especially charging the ball. He was also willing to put his body in front of the hard smashes right at him. Smith lists "catcher" as a secondary position and looking at him physically and the way he plays defense at third base we'd guess he's probably a pretty good catcher who might even think of continuing to pursue that position in the future. Smith has a similar approach at the plate both right handed and left handed. He has a limited stride and weight shift into the ball and uses his upper body strength to generate bat speed. Smith has some lift and extension to his swing and put his power on display with a booming triple off the right centerfield fence. He also had a nice double into the corner during game action. He definitely showed us he could handle the wood bat with power and there could still be more power there with some adjustments. Smith is a very good overall player with a nice balance of baseball skills. He's also a good student.
