Canes Win Title on Dillon Maples No-Hit Effort >>

7/20/2009 12:46:54 PM

Dillon Maples enters his 7th inning of work looking to secure both the win and his no-hitter. A flyout to first starts the inning and Maples continues to keep his fastball velocity in the upper 80s. Maples notches his 9th K on another running fastball away from a lefthanded hitter and is now only one out away. Two quick strikes and now it is only one pitch away from being final. Maples closes out the win with another strikeout brining his total to 10 for the game. He finished with 7IP 0R 0H 3BB 2HP in a masterful effort for the win. Congrats to the 2009 16U WWBA National Champion: Canes North 16's!
Canes Plate a Pair of Runs in 6th >>

7/20/2009 12:39:25 PM

Mitchell Peterson returns for his third inning of work, and surrenders a leadoff single to 1B Curt Britt (2012, Scottland HS, NC), and a walk to Grayson Atwood. A sacrifice by Nick Thompson moves both runners into scoring position with only one out. A sac-fly by Jordan Ramsey (2011, North Davidson HS, NC) plates the runner from third base making it a 5-0 lead for the Canes with two outs. A double to deep center by Jordan Boze (2011, Lee-Davis HS, VA) extends the lead to 6-0 for the Canes. A groundout to 3rd ends the inning and we move to the top half of the 7th.
Canes Defense Steps Up, No Hitter Survives >>

7/20/2009 12:30:45 PM

Dillon Maples takes both the lead and his no hitter into the 6th inning, and has issued his third free pass to Sam Bass of the Mustangs, and then lost control of a fastball that hit Trent Higginbothem who has now reached three times, with a walk and two hit by pitches. Maples broke off a knee buckling breaking ball to pinch hitter Trevor Carnahan for his first out of the inning, and now faces Brandon Horn with one out and runners on first and second. An incredible defensive play by Canes 3B Grayson Atwood who makes a diving backhanded stop then completes the double play by tagging third and throwing out the hitter at first. His play not only saved the no hitter, but it also saved at least one run as he took away a sure fire double with his diving stop.
Canes go Quietly in 5th >>

7/20/2009 12:21:07 PM

Mitchell Peterson begins his second inning with a flyout to second off the bat of Josh Tobias. Peterson has been working a 75-77mph fastball with a 67-69mph change and 65mph curve to keep the Canes hitters off balance. Peterson got fly outs to left and then right to end the inning. All of his outs have been recorded in the air as he seems to be getting the Canes to swing under his fastball when he works it up in the zone. After five complete it is 4-0 Canes.

7/20/2009 12:14:01 PM

Dillon Maples begins his fifth inning of work for the Canes looking to keep putting up zeroes on the scoreboard. The late movement on Maples fastball has really made the Mustang hitters job difficult today as he continues to rack up ground ball outs and strikeouts. With two quick groundouts Maples surrendered his second walk, but came right back with his 7th strikeout on a vicious breaking ball to end the inning. Through 4 and a half scoreless innings it is time to mention that Maples is yet to allow a hit thus far...
Canes Capitalize on Free Passes to Extend Lead >>

7/20/2009 12:05:15 PM

Brandon Tyler begins his second inning of relief with a routine ground out to shortstop. He has been throwing his fastball with some cutting action to righties. His fastball has been consistently 80-83mph. Canes 3B Grayson Atwood (2011, Mt. Pleasant HS, NC) drew a walk, and so did DH Nick Thompson, causing the Mustangs to make another pitching change. RHP Mitchell Peterson (2011, South Walton HS, FL) is the new pitcher who inherits runners on first and second with one out. After a flyout made the second out, Cameron Capell (2011, Kerr-Vance Academy, NC) squared up a breaking ball and hit a sharp line drive two RBI single to right field and then advanced on the throw. Peterson induced a ground out to end the inning, the Canes now lead 4-0 after four complete.
Mustangs Threaten, but Strand Runner in Top of 4 >>

7/20/2009 11:53:36 AM

Dillon Maples opened the inning with a couple of wicked, tight curve balls but lost the handle on a fastball and hit Trent Higginbothem. Trent advanced on a wild pitch by Maples putting a runner in scoring position with no outs as the Mustangs look to scratch at least one run across this inning. Maples recorded a strikeout and then got a grounder to second base to get to two outs with the runner now advanced to 3rd on the ground out. Maples struggled with control briefly earlier this inning, but appears to have corrected it as he is back to throwing pounding the lower part of the strike zone. Maples recorded his 6th strikeout on another very good breaking ball which has been a nasty pitch all day espescially against right handed batters.
Canes Threaten but do not Score in Bottom of Third >>

7/20/2009 11:38:07 AM

Gabe Hunter notched his second strikeout of the game against opposing pitcher Dillon Maples. Josh Tobias reached base for a second time by displaying very quick wrists on a single laced right over 3B. Tobias advanced to second on a stolen base, making him 1-2 on stolen base attempts so far in this game. Hunter has shown good pitching instincts, battling back in several counts where he has gotten behind hitters. Tobias swiped 3rd for his second stolen base of the inning, better make that 2-3 on attempts! When Tobias gets a good lead he is so quick that the stolen base appears easy.

After walking Jake Cave, the Mustangs have made the decision to relieve starter Gabe Hunter and replace him with RHP Brandon Tyler (2011, Pace HS, FL). Taylor has come into a very tough spot with runners on the corners, only one out and facing the heart of the Canes' order. Cave swiped second base to put both runners in scoring position, and with first base open, the Mustangs opted to pitch around Kyle Martin and face cleanup hitter Luke Dunlap with the bases loaded. Tyler notched a clutch strikeout looking against Dunlap and Tobias got caught trying to steal home to end the threat without any runs scored.
Canes Cruise Through Third >>

7/20/2009 11:21:51 AM

Dillon Maples failed to record a strikeout, but still posted a scoreless 1-2-3 top of the third. One flyout and two groundouts sent the Mustangs back to the field for the bottom half of the inning. Maples continues to hit 90 and 91MPH consistently and his fastball is showing lots of late life with good movement to his armside. His performance has been excellent thus far as he has quieted what had been a red hot Florida Mustang offense.
Canes Bats Go Silent In Bottom Of Second >>

7/20/2009 11:17:16 AM

Gabe Hunter rebounded nicely in his second inning of work, keeping his 81-83mph fastball low in the strike zone, and working in a nice change up in the upper 60s to induce two groundouts. Hunter recorded his first strikeout of the game for the first out of what proved to be a very quick inning.
Maples Breezes Through Second Inning >>

7/20/2009 11:13:09 AM

The top of the second passed very quickly as the only player to reach base against Maples was on a passed ball on a swinging strike three. Maples recovered with a ground ball to third to end the inning. Maples continues to throw in the 88-92mph range on his fastball, and his curve has been practically unhittable so far as Maples' strikeout total is already at four.

Cave was caught stealing on the very next pitch on a great throw by catcher Brandon Horn (2011, Fort Walton Beach HS, FL). The Canes bats started to wake up with a single by EH Kyle Martin (2011, Wade Hampton HS, SC) and then cashed in on a HR to left center by CF Luke Dunlap ( 2011, East Forsyth HS, NC). Hunter allowed another hit but then a flyout ended the inning. In relief, RHP Jordan Hillyer (2012, Hebron Christian HS, GA) closed out the shutout, hitting 81 mph in the process.
Offense, Pitching Click for Indiana Mustangs >>

7/15/2009 2:08:49 PM

The Indiana Mustangs showed some serious horsepower in a 8-0 triumph over the Big Hitter Diamond Stas at Chattahoochee HS Tuesday afternoon.

CF Derek Asuras (2011, Noblesville HS, IN) and C Michael Conner (2011, Carmel HS, IN) both went 2-for-4  with 1 RBI and EH Brandon Wind (2011, Lawrence Central HS, IN) was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI.

Asuras had a good two-strike hitting approach and made good read on base paths. Similarly, Connor showed aggressiveness at the plate and had good base running instincts while Wind had good hands and a good bat.

On the rubber, LHP Madison Foster (2012, Park Tubor HS, IN) gave up just one hit through five innings and tallied four strikeouts against the Diamond Stars.

RHP Beau Bowen (2011, Carmel HS, IN) finished Foster's shutout in the sixth, retiring the side in order — the last two hitters by strikeout. Bowen's fastball topped out at 84 mph and showed good movement.
Taylor Brings Heat Against Scorpions >>

7/15/2009 12:25:22 PM

Tri-State Arsenal RHP Shane Taylor (2010, Clearview HS, NJ) threw five strong innings in a 8-1 win over the Orlando Scorpions Purple on Field 2 at the East Cobb Complex.

Totaling four strikeouts and allowing one run on the only three hits given up by Tri-State, Taylor topped out at 89 mph and threw a tight, late-breaking 81-mph slider. His fastball sat between 84-88 and showed some good arm-side run as well.
Smith, Harris Combine for 1-Hit Shutout >>

7/15/2009 10:30:50 AM

RHP Ryan Harris (2011, Jupiter HS, FL) finished what RHP Kyle Smith (2011, Santaluces HS, FL) started at Sequoyah HS, tallying three-straight Ks in the top of the seventh to close out a one-hit, 3-0 shutout victory for the Palm Beach County PAL.

Smith, who hit 88 mph, breezed through the Chain Baseball Gold 15U lineup, managing 14 strike outs and allowing just one hit — a single in the second. Through six innings, the 6-0, 150-pound hurler showed clean mechanics, good balance, and mixed in his 77-mph slider well.

In the seventh, Harris dominated, using his arm strength and power to zip low-90s fastballs by Chain's No. 10, 11, and 1 hitters. He topped out at 93 mph and sat between 89-92 and had a straight 72-mph change and a 76-mph 10-4 curve.

Nagel, Bouey Headline 5-5 Tie >>

7/15/2009 10:04:32 AM

RHP Pete Nagel (2011, Metter HS, GA)  posted 11 strike outs in six innings of work for Round Trip Baseball 2, touching 87 mph throughout.

Mid-Atlantic Mets RHP Will Bouey (2011, Sherwood HS, MD) also dialed it up, hitting 88 and ranging between 81-87. In addition to his heater, Bouey showed great demeanor on the mound and had a nasty 80-mph split fastball.
Inghram, Rupe Dual in 1-Run Contest >>

7/15/2009 9:45:57 AM

Richmond Braves National '11 LHP Josh Inghram (2011, Grassfield HS, VA) and PONY Express RHP Kyle Rupe (2011, Perry Meridian HS, IN) battled down to the wire during the 2 p.m. game at Sprayberry HS.

Rupe pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out five. The 5-11, 170-pound pitcher/shortstop also displayed good arm and arm speed, topping out at 87 mph and sitting between 83-85.

Meanwhile, Inghram, who went the distance for the Braves, tallied 10 strike outs and surrendered just two hits — both singles. In the game, he had good arm whip and a smooth, fluid motion with good run on his 85-mph fastball.
McCue Dominantes as Closer >>

7/15/2009 9:21:00 AM

2011 On Deck O's-Black RHP Chris McCue (2011, Providence Day School, NC)  struck out three straight batters (one looking) to close out a 3-3 tie against the Browns Mill Barons.

Hitting 88 mph, McCue is a mechanically sound pitcher, who showed good command of both his fastball and his 67-mph curve.

Standing 5-8 at 155 pounds, McCue doesn't have your prototypical pitcher's build. But he does boast a big arm and a 85-87 mph range on his heater.
Goreham Shuts Down Florida Pokers >>

7/15/2009 9:03:46 AM

RHP Matt Goreham (2011, Catholic Memorial HS, MA) threw seven solid innings for the SSBC Seadogs, striking out 14 hitters — nearly two every inning — in a 4-1 win over the Florida Pokers.

Sitting between 83-86 mph and topping out at 87, Goreham utilized his fastball to get ahead of hitters and managed to keep them off balance with a 77-mph slider, which displayed a sharp downward break.

The 6-3, 230-pound pitcher also uses his body well and shows a competitive aggressiveness on the mound.
Several Good Arms in FTB/US Baseball Matchup >>

7/14/2009 7:29:51 PM

Parents, fans, and scouts who attended the 11:30 game at Sprayberry HS got to see four solid young pitchers compete.

Three hurlers for the FTB Clap Bat threw 83 mph or better, while US Baseball Stars RHP Christian Morris (2012, Williston HS, FL) topped out at 87.

Morris, who showed good arm action and good arm speed, pitched the first two innings and sat between 82-84 mph.

For FTB Clap Bat, RHP Jose Ortega (2011, Lake Howell HS, FL) reached 83 with good movement on his fastball during four innings of work and also had good bite on 68-mph curve.

However, LHP Bryan Rivera (2011, Puerto Rico Academy, FL) and RHP Gabe Rivera (2011, Hagerty HS, FL) both hit 84 and displayed good arm action and arm speed.

Cave Pitches Well for Canes in Tie Effort >>

7/14/2009 6:57:39 PM

LHP Jake Cave (2011, Hampton Christian HS, VA) went the distance for the Canes North 16s but couldn't come away with the win against the BigStix Gamers, instead settling for a 1-1 tie.

Through seven innings, Cave faced just three batters over the minimum, surrendering one run on three hits while totaling eight strike outs. The 6-0, 170-pound southpaw also touched 90 mph and stayed in the upper 80s well into the seventh inning, peaking at 89.
Cameron Carlton Dominant, Touches 90MPH! >>

7/14/2009 5:58:00 PM

Alabama Heat starting pitcher Cameron Carleton (2011, Dadeville High School, Dadeville AL) threw five no hit one run innings in a masterful performance at East Cobb Field #3. Cameron struck out 11 batters, while allowing only four walks and no hits. Jake Hester then pitched the 6th and struck out all 3 batters faced. Jake McWhirter pitched the 7th and stuck out one to complete the no hitter.

Cameron kept hitters off balance with a very good curve to supplement his 84-90MPH fastball. His breaking ball came in between 66-69MPH, and that combination of movement and velocity differential can help lead to dominating performances like the one witnessed at the Complex tonight.

Tournament Game Wraps and Blogs >>

7/14/2009 5:51:47 PM

A quick note about posting wraps and blogs:

Game summaries (or "wraps" as we like call them) of each game played at the WWBA 16U National Championship will be posted on the WWBA website in as timely fashion as possible.

The main challenge in doing wraps and posting live scouting blogs is that both are done from one central location — the East Cobb Complex.

While game scores can be called in and immediately posted online, there is a significant delay between the time games are completed and the time a score sheet is turned in to the tower since all but four fields (three at East Cobb plus Kell HS) are located several miles away.

Throw in midday bumper-to-bumper traffic headaches, and you're talking about a significant hurdle preventing us from complying with the fast-paced 24-hour news cycle.

So thank you for your patience. We're working hard to meet your demand for premium content.
The Orlando Scorpions Gray and John Sandfort >>

7/14/2009 5:12:03 PM

Aside from huge offensive burst against the Teal Ravens, the Orlando Scorpions Gray got a solid relief outing out of young RHP Jon Sandfort (2012, Winter Springs HS, FL).

Despite allowing a pair of runs on one hit, Sandfort closed out a 16-5 Scorpions win and reached 87 mph in the process.

Tall and lanky at 6-4, 200 pounds, the Sunshine State native has a smooth windup with a big kick delivery. He also manages to catch hitters off guard with a 74-mph Frisbee slider that shows a lot of movement.

Sandfort can also mash the ball from the other side of the plate. He went 3-for-4 with a double and 4 RBI against the Ravens.

Similarly, DH Miguel Frias (2012, Lyman HS, FL) looked good on offense, going 3-for-4 with a single and two doubles — both of which accounted for 3 RBI.
Papi Throws Heat in Relief for East Coast Grays >>

7/14/2009 4:41:00 PM

SS/RHP Michael Papi (2011, Tunkhannock Area HS, PA) hit 89 mph during two relief innings to help the East Coast Grays edge the East Cobb Dodgers, 7-4.

Throwing mostly fastballs that flash occasional arm-side run, Papi managed four strike outs but was a bit wild. He walked four batters and allowed runners to advance on two wild pitches.

However, standing at 6-2 and 180 pounds, Papi certainly possesses some untapped potential and should get better in the next couple years.
Pfeifer Dials It Up Against Best 9 Angels >>

7/14/2009 4:09:43 PM

Nearly halfway through the first day of the 16U tournament, LHP Philip Pfeifer (2011, Farragut HS, TN) undoubtedly stands as 'the hardest throwing lefty seen thus far' with a little over 20 games left to be completed.

Touching 91 mph while sitting between 84-89, Pfeifer scorched through the Best 9 Angels lineup, tallying 16 strike outs and allowing just two runs on four hits in a 10-2 win for the Knoxville Stars.

Pfeifer's fastball had good arm-side run, and the big 6-0, 175-pound pitcher/first baseman also possesses a tight-spinning, 73-mph curve with a small 1-7 break.
East Cobb Astros 15u Hitters Shine in Victory >>

7/14/2009 2:12:16 PM

The East Cobb Astros 15u showed some serious offensive firepower in their first game of the tournament defeating the Jack Cust Diamond Jacks 16u Black by a score of 12-1.

While many Astro players had good games there were two excellent performances which deserve special mention. Matt Gonzalez (2012, Harrison HS, Acworth GA) and Jared Walsh (2011, Peachtree Ridge HS, Duluth GA) really led the offensive charge for the Astros.

Matt went 3-3, 2 1Bs, 2B, BB, 3R, 2RBI and was the first run to score in the game for the Astros. Jared finished a triple short of the cycle going 3-3, 1B, 2B, HR, BB, R, 3RBI. These two helped pace the Astros offense in their 12-1 victory.

More updates to come soon!
EC Astros Blast Diamond Jacks Black >>

7/14/2009 1:41:33 PM

Two East Cobb Astros combined for eight outstanding at-bats this morning on Field 1 at the Complex.

RF Jared Walsh (2011, Peachtree Ridge HS, GA) and SS Matt Gonzalez (2012, Harrison HS, GA) each went 3-for-3 with a walk in a 12-1 victory over the Jack Cust Diamond Jacks Black.

Gonzalez posted two singles, a double, and three RBI during the contest. Meanwhile, Walsh belted a single, a double, and a homer to bring in four runs against the Diamond Jacks.

At the plate, Gonzalez stands in with a quiet approach geared towards hitting to the opposite field (he laced two of his three hits to right fielding, including his double in the third inning, which found its way into the right-center-field gap).

However, Walsh is little more active in the batter's box as a lefty but displays patience, excellent bat speed, and oppo power potential. His two-run dinger went sailing over the left-field fence in the fourth.
Ford Touches 87 Against Orlando Reds >>

7/14/2009 11:21:42 AM

RHP Mike Ford (2010, Hun School of Princeton, NJ) tossed five scoreless innings for the NJ Super 16 in a 10-0 victory over the Orlando Reds, hitting 87 mph along the way.

The 6-0, 190-pound hurler tallied two strikeouts, no walks, and allowed just three hits — a pair of singles and a double — facing just one batter over the minimum.

Ford utilized a 10-4, 73-mph slurve and a 76-mph change up to keep hitters off balance and fielded his position well on two grounders to the mound.

He also showed some power at the plate, launching a 2-RBI homer in the top of the first that gave NJ Super 16 and early 2-0 lead.

Palm Beach Elite Pitchers Shine in No-Hit Effort >>

7/14/2009 11:03:35 AM

With all of the morning games in the books we can update you all on the action. The most notable performance thus far was a combined no hitter thrown by starter Joseph Barbera (2010, Wellington HS, FL) and reliever Thomas Kirchner (2011, Wellington HS, FL).

Joseph Barbera threw 6 overpowering no hit innings as he utilized a low 80s fastball and 12-6 curve to strikeout 13 of the 19 batters he faced, allowing only one baserunner to reach on an error in the 4th inning. He struck out the side in both the 3rd and 4th innings.

Thomas Kirchner threw one scoreless relief inning to seal the 9-0 no hit shutout over the Riptide Development. In his brief outing Thomas used an upper 70s fastball and a nice low 70s change up to keep hitters off balance. The only runner to reach base on Thomas was a two out walk, but he rebounded by striking out the final batter of the game to seal the combined to hit effort.

More top performance updates to come!
