Shortstop Wesley Jones (2013, Redan HS, GA) and Kel Johnson (2014, Palmetto, GA) provided all of the offense for East Cobb Baseball in a 3-1 win over Tri-State Arsenal to advance to the Quarterfinals.
Jones, the team's 3-hole hitter and a Georgia recruit, went 3-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI, while Johnson, the cleanup hitter, added a double of his own on his 2-for-3, 2 RBI performance. Their back-to-back doubles in the first inning gave East Cobb an early 2-0 lead.
In addition to Jones' steady/flashy defense at SS, he is hitting the ball extremely well in Jupiter, going 2-for-3 earlier in the day to knock of the Texas Scout Team Yankees and is hitting .571 overall in the tournament.
Johnson, a Georgia Tech recruit that is currently ranked No. 35 in the class of 2014, has also enjoyed a big tournament and is making a case for a big jump in the 2014 rankings. A right-handed hitter, Johnson has an advanced approach and very good bat speed, consistently hitting the ball hard with impressive pull power. He too had a big game against the Texas Scout Team Yankees in the first round of the playoffs, hitting a no-doubt home run in the game, and overall is hitting .308 in the tournament.
Fellow GT recruit and 2-hole hitter Keenan Innis (Blessed Trinity HS, GA) scored a pair of runs in the game.
East Cobb starter Addison Reed did a nice job scattering 4 hits and 2 walks in his 6.2 innings of work. He was around the zone for most of the game, using an easy, balanced delivery while throwing mostly 82-86 mph fastballs, peaking at 87.
Tri-State Arsenal made things interesting in the 7th inning, loading the bases to put the tying run on second base, but reliever Tyler Haswell (2013, Peachtree Ridge HS, GA), who threw 87-89 mph, punched out the final batter to secure the win.
In the loss Tommy Marcinczyk (2013, Middlesex HS, NJ) went 2-for-2 with a walk and Tri-State's lone run scored, while Pedro Perez Jr. (2013, Burling City HS, NJ) went 2-for-3.
Tri-State starter LHP Devin Smeltzer (2014, Bishop Eustace Prep, NJ) used a 84-87 mph fastball and sharp low-70s curve in the first 3 innings of the game, while RHP Ronald Marinaccio (2013, Toms River North, NJ) struck out 5 batters over the final 3 innings, attacking the EC hitters with a 84-88 mph fastball and low- to mid-70s curve.
East Cobb Baseball will face Palm Beach PAL in the Quarterfinals on Monday morning.
