Team Sheet: Iowa

Kyler Peterson
What Happened: Iowa went 0-3 in Jacksonville, losing 5-7 to Auburn, 9-12 to Virginia, and 6-12 to Wichita State.

Biggest Strength: Weekend rotation

The Hawkeyes arguably have a top five rotation in the country with Brecht, Morgan, and Obermueller. All three are likely day one picks and all different pitchers with their own type swing-and-miss. The staff is more than capable of toppling  big offenses when on, however the ultimate ceiling of the rotation will be dependent upon how much their strikes improve.

Concern: Bullpen

The bullpen was something that constantly exploited throughout the weekend, leading the game in all three games when the starting pitcher departed. The ‘pen blew all three games, just getting smacked around and allowing too many free passes. The Hawkeyes relievers are not untalented per say and have solid stuff. They will need to step up in general as well as throw more strikes in order to be competitive.

Best Player on the Field:
Sam Petersen

Petersen is an absolute gamer and can contribute in so many ways on the baseball field. He is coming off of a very strong 2023 campaign in which he batted .319 with double-digit homers. Petersen is an excellent runner as well and led the team last year with 20 stolen bases.

Sam Petersen, OF

Petersen is coming off of a big 2023 in which he saw his stock increase. The outfielder slashed .319/.449/.584 with 11 homers and 20 stolen bases. He also had a very solid Cape and continued to show off the legs. Petersen swung it well in Jacksonville and homered in the late innings versus Auburn. The two-run shot came off of a 96 mph fastball that he snuck backside over the right field wall. The right-handed bat projects to have an average hit tool at the next level and has a direct swing with average bat speed. Petersen uses all fields with authority and handles spin well. He has good hitter traits and although the power is not huge, he possesses sneaky pop that has shown up in game, figuring to be fringy. The junior manned left field and is a plus, borderline plus-plus runner. The speed plays on the basepaths and he should have be able to transition to centerfield. Petersen is a gamer with a solid hit tool and great speed. If he continues on the track, performing and showing pop, he projects somewhere in the fifth round range.
