Esparza is a live bodied and well proportioned 5-10 junior infielder from Georgia who also shows prospect ability as a right handed pitcher. We didn’t get to see Esparza run hard because he had a pre-existing leg injury, but he was light on his feet in infield drills and looked like he was probably a good runner when he was healthy. Defensively, Esparza had smooth hands and easy actions and very good arm strength. If he’s quick enough, he looks like he could be a nice defensive infielder. At the plate, Esparza has wiry strength and a sound approach with wood. He made very solid contact in the games and drove the ball hard a couple of times. Esparza has a line drive swing plane and stayed inside the ball well most of the time and used all fields. On the mound, Esparza has a quick, short arm action in back with nice extension out front. He has an arm hook in back and will further wrap his curveball, which is a concern for his future development. Esparza worked his fastball anywhere from 78 to 86 mph and had tight spin on his 64-68 mph curveball. Overall, he’s very raw as a pitcher but the arm strength and stuff is there for future improvement. Very good college prospect. Esparza is a very good student as well.
