Riley McCarthy is a 2018 OF/LHP, 1B with a 6-3 170 lb. frame from Spring Valley, CA who attends Steele Canyon. Large frame with long limbs and a lean, athletic build. Frame projects to support additional size with strength. Ran a 7.05 sixty-yard dash. Primary outfielder with clean, smooth footwork while closing to and working through the baseball. Fluid, sound glove actions while funneling and working through exchange. Created good momentum while moving through the baseball that generated solid, on line carry at release topping at 78 miles per hour. Also worked out defensively from first base showing athletic footwork while centering the baseball. Funnels the baseball out front with fluid glove actions. Created some carry across the infield topping at 71 miles per hour. Left handed hitter with an upright, open stance and compact hand set at load. Hands work to contact on an inside path creating a level, line drive plane through extension. Flashed the ability to turn the barrel generating some bat speed to pull side. Primarily worked between the gaps but flashed best jump off the barrel to pull side. Also pitched utilizing a smooth paced, rock step delivery. Stays tall on back side at gather and works to the plate with drop and drive actions. Drives off mound with drop and drive actions while landing at a slightly closed position. Carries momentum to glove side at finish while releasing from a three-quarters arm slot. Created solid extension out front with a fastball offering that had some running action to arm side, topped at 75 miles per hour. Showed very good feel for a curveball that had 1/7 shape with tight spin and solid depth. Changed speeds well while pitching down in the zone and induced weak contact. Good student.
