3/1/12: Southern California’s Tanner Rahier has taken a non-standard path to being one of the top high school position prospects in the 2012 class, but it certainly has worked out well. Despite his chiseled 6-foot-2, 205-pound build, you won’t find him in the weight room as much as other top high school athletes. He’s much more likely to be found hauling weighted tractor tires across rough fields or swinging oversized axes at hardened old trees, all part of a high intensity workout program designed by his father, Jim, a professional sports performance specialist. Nor will you be able to watch him play for his high school team this spring. Rahier hasn’t played for Palm Desert High School since starting as a freshman in 2009, choosing instead to play in a wood bat spring league ran through his summer/fall program, the ABD Bulldogs. There is no doubt that Rahier has won over the often conservative and tradition oriented professional scouting community. Join a gathering of Southern California area scouts and it quickly becomes apparent that Rahier is right at the top of their list, not just for his tools but for the way he plays the game. “You just have to love his approach to the game,” one veteran scout told me last August. “He plays like he just loves every part of it, whether it’s hitting or fielding or pitching or just hanging around the field. He’s all ball player and it shows.” The universal comparison for Rahier in Southern California is Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria, who attended Long Beach State before being the third overall pick in the 2006 draft. That comparison goes beyond just the tools and physical profile and into the makeup areas as well. The irony is that Longoria wasn’t even drafted out of high school and didn’t become a highly regarded prospect until getting bigger and stronger as a collegian. Rahier has obviously already reached that point physically. The Longoria comparison begs a question about Rahier’s future; whether he stays at shortstop for the near or long-term or whether he’s a third baseman. Rahier is certainly athletic enough to handle shortstop in the near term. He’s a 6.6 to 6.7 runner who is light on his feet for his size and plenty athletic. His arm strength grades out as a plus at any position on the field and he’s thrown up to 93 mph off the mound. Rahier’s actions through the ball aren’t smooth or low effort, however, and he often has to depend on his arm strength to get outs when his release gets long. His offensive potential at shortstop could be an incredible plus, just as it is with a similar large bodied shortstop such as top 2012 shortstop prospect Carlos Correa, so moving him out of the middle infield should be done with caution. Rahier’s first round tool, though, is his right handed bat. He has extremely strong hands and arms courtesy of his workout routines, and generates outstanding bat speed with a line drive swing plane. Rahier doesn’t have the lift in his swing at present of comparable hitters such as former ABD teammate Travis Harrison (supplemental first round, Twins, 2011), but he squares the ball up as frequently as any top hitter in the 2012 class and the ball regularly comes off his bat at velocities between 95 and 100 mph. He should have no problem adjusting to upper level pitching and velocity with his present swing mechanics and approach. Rahier has certainly made his impact with Perfect Game as well. He attended his first event as an eighth grader in 2008 and has participated in almost 20 Perfect Game or WWBA events since, including the 2011 Perfect Game All-American Classic.

Tanner Rahier is a 2012 SS/RHP with a 6-2 205 lb. frame from Indian Wells, CA who attends Palm Desert HS. Very strong well proportioned build, mature look. Right handed hitter, wide stance, gets coiled and loaded well, very aggressive swing with outstanding raw bat speed, stays balanced well, squares up and drives the ball hard, pull approach, line drive plane but can drive it out of the park. 6.62 runner, very good infield arm strength, good foot quickness, shows range, good transfer, some effort on release. Also pitched, fastball to 93 mph, twisty curveball. Good student, verbal commitment to San Diego. Named to the Perfect Game All American Classic team.

Tanner Rahier is a 2012 SS/RHP with a 6-2 205 lb. frame from Indian Wells, CA who attends Palm Desert. Very good athlete. Advanced actions at SS, waits back, hands field cleanly, stays balance. Arm is very quick, with very good strength and accuracy. Showed great range to 5.5 hole during game, arm is definitley strong enough to make long throws from left side. Lots of pop in bat at plate, drives ball with authority. Balanced, strength allows him to hit ball other way with authority. Great bat speed, hit HR in BP. Top level position player prospect. Also showed lots of potential on mound. Consistent high 80s velocity with short arm action. Quick tempo delivery, ball comes out very well. Overpowered hitters with fastball and sharp breaking slider that had 2-plane break and was tough for hitters to pick up. Good student. Highest level 2-way prospect. Named to Top Prospect Team.
