3/19/12: While Lucas Giolito and Lance McCullers have received plenty of well-deserved attention as hard throwing right handers in the 2012 class, if you asked national scouts and analysts who the third hardest thrower in the class is, you would probably generate plenty of discussion and debate. The body of evidence shows that Georgia high school right hander Duane Underwood has a strong case for that distinction. Over the last four events that Perfect Game has scouted Underwood (the 2011 WWBA 17U National Championships, the 2011 BCS 17U Championship, the 2011 East Coast Professional Showcase and the 2011 Perfect Game All-American Classic) he’s topped out at 95, 97, 98 and 96 mph, respectively. That speaks for itself. Underwood’s pitching style isn’t strictly power based, however. Over the last year he’s shown significantly improved pitchability and will frequently pitch at 90-92 mph with very good downhill angle to the plate when he’s down in the zone. He’s starting to develop a feel for how to either cut or sink his fastball with some intent, and when he’s in the low-90s it’s very low effort. Then all of a sudden you’ll see 94, 96, 95 on the next three pitches and as a scout you say, “the velocity is there whenever he wants it.” In addition to his fastball velocity and increasing awareness of movement and command, Underwood separates himself from most other top prospect right-handers with his changeup. Not only is it his second best pitch, it might be the best changeup among any of the top right-handers in the class. Underwood maintains very good arm speed on the pitch and gets consistent sink and run. He seems to have the confidence to throw it at any point in the count to both right-handed and left-handed hitters as well. The one pitch that Underwood hasn’t mastered yet is a breaking ball. He throws a 72-75 mph curveball that is more a get-me-over type pitch at the moment. He throws it for strikes, but it lacks the type of power and bite that you would ideally like to see in order to project it to be an average pitch at the Major League level. Scouts will be watching Underwood’s breaking ball carefully this spring and evaluating his potential for improvement or for picking up a slider in the future. The fact that Underwood has shown he can cut his fastball with intent at 90-91 mph is a positive sign for his slider potential. Underwood also gets plus points from the scouts for his overall athleticism. He was a primary outfielder when he joined the East Cobb program in 2010 and runs a 6.8 60 while showing a powerful bat at the plate. Knowing that he has limited innings on the mound and is still showing aptitude in improving his mechanics and individual pitches helps in his overall projection for scouts.

Duane Underwood is a 2012 OF/RHP with a 6-2 195 lb. frame from Marietta, GA who attends Pope HS. Extra strong, loose athletic build. High level two-way potential. 6.84 runner, very good outfield range, easy plus arm with on line carry and accuracy. Straight stance hitting, present bat speed, good loose extension out front, hands get long to the ball at times, drives the ball hard to right centerfield, aggressive baserunner. Balanced delivery on the mound, long and loose arm action, 3/4's release point, some effort on release, throws downhill. Fastball to 92 mph, some running action, good shape and spin to curveball. Named to the Top Prospect team.

Duane Underwood is a 2012 3B/RHP, OF with a 6-2 185 lb. frame from Hiram, GA who attends McEachern. Underwood is a high level 2-way prospect. The ball comes off his barrel well and he showed good bat speed. He has excellent hitting tools to work with and projects very well. On the mound he has a fast whippy arm and we have seen him in the low 90's. He is a bit raw on the mound but showed good potential. The bat and the arm need to be followed very closely.
