2/10/12: While it’s not uncommon for former Major League players to have sons who are accomplished baseball prospects, it’s not always a precise fit from father to son in terms of athletic tools and draft potential as a high school senior. For the Williams, father Eddie and son Trey, it’s just about an exact match.
Eddie was the fourth overall pick (New York Mets) in the 1983 draft out of Hoover High School in San Diego (Hoover had earlier produced another Williams with some hitting talent by the name of Ted). He was a right handed hitting third baseman with big time power and arm strength. Strangely enough, Williams changed teams twice in his first two years as a professional in deals that would not have been possible under today’s rules. He was first traded to Cincinnati within a year of signing as part of a trade for RHP Bruce Berenyi, then was picked in the 1985 Rule 5 draft by Cleveland. He made his big league debut with the Indians in 1986 and played parts of 10 seasons in the Major Leagues. Williams also was somewhat of a baseball gypsy, playing in Japan, Korea and Mexico, as well as being part of various independent leagues, before retiring in 2002.
Although projecting Trey Williams to be the fourth pick in the 2012 draft might be a bit of a stretch, he is bigger and stronger than his dad was at the same age and probably has more raw power. Williams uses his hands very well to generate his power and his signature swing, and during the 2011 Perfect Game National Showcase he showed that strength and power. Williams got a 91 mph fastball out over the plate but up in the zone and got his hands up to the ball and crushed a line drive that carried over the right centerfield fence just to the right of the batter’s eye at City of Palms Park. The sound of the ball coming off the bat was like an explosion and it was a different type of swing and result than most 17-year olds are usually capable of producing.
That was the second time that Williams had entered his name into Perfect Game lore. The first time was as a well known but previously unseen sophomore at the 2009 WWBA 16U National Championships as part of the San Diego Show’s roster. The then 15-year old Williams blasted three home runs in one game and did it at one of the East Cobb Complex fields, ensuring that everyone was watching his power display.
Williams’ defensive tools at third base are solid and he should have no problem staying at the position as a professional. He is light on his feet for a 6-1/210 athlete and his arm strength is in the fringy plus to above average area on the pro grading scale. He was the defensive standout at the 2011 Perfect Game All-American Game in his father’s hometown of San Diego, making diving catches while playing both third base and left field.
