Mathew Stein is a 2006 outfielder/pitcher from Flintridge Prep HS in Sunland, CA, with a 5'9", 175 lb. frame, and was named to the Top Prospect Team. He is a strong player with some more room for added muscle in the future. Stein has good overall tools with present strength that transfers well at the plate. He is a right handed hitter with good bat speed from a slightly open stance. He has a short and powerful stroke that is simple and quiet and maximizes contact. He is a tough kid to strike out and should be a middle to early part of the line up type bat that should generate a lot of runs. Defensively he has solid arm strength from the outfield with a quick first step that helps him cover ground. He is very fluid with his actions and mechanics and makes it look easy. On the mound he throws from a high 3/4 to over the top release point with a loose arm and good arm speed. His fastball topped out at 86 mph and he hit his spots well. Stein also mixed in a very sharp breaking ball from 75-78 mph that will be a strikeout pitch at the next level. He struck out 2 batters in his one inning of work and did not allow a hit. Stein is a true two-way prospect that can succeed at the next level. He is a must follow and is a good student as well.
