2/29/12: Unlike 2011, when five college lefthanders were scooped up in the first round, this year’s draft is much thinner in terms of quality southpaws. Heaney, along with Florida’s Brian Johnson and Samford’s Lex Rutledge, are in the running to be the first college lefty taken, but none is a lock to go in the first round.
Though Heaney was heavily-scouted at an Oklahoma City high school and a 24th-round pick of the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2009 draft, he is still scratching the surface of his ability. He led the Oklahoma State staff in wins as both a freshman and sophomore, but went only a combined 12-8, 4.60 with 106 strikeouts in 133 innings while moving in and out of the Cowboys rotation.
It wasn’t until Heaney locked in as a starter last summer for Falmouth of the Cape Cod League, where he went 4-3, 3.38 with 46 strikeouts in 45 innings, that he finally started to showcase his superior talent on a consistent basis. He was installed as Oklahoma State’s Friday starter from the outset this season and appears primed for a breakout 2012 campaign that could see him surge into the first round. He excelled in his first two starts, going 1-1, 1.26 with five walks and 22 strikeouts in 14 innings, and set a personal-best with 12 punch-outs in his second outing.
Heaney has always had quality stuff for a lefthander, but it wasn’t until he settled in as a regular starter that he displayed much-improved command of his lively 90-94 mph fastball, sharp curve and changeup. With his advanced feel for pitching, scouts say that he could become one of the first players from the 2012 draft class to reach the big leagues.
While Heaney normally works from a three-quarters slot, he is capable of throwing from a variety of arm angles and will often drop down against lefthanded hitters, giving them fits in the process. He also is adept at mixing his pitches, and has an advanced feel for generating cutting action on his fastball, varying the speed on his breaking stuff and creating tumbling action on his change.
Heaney has always had solid mechanics, dating back to his high-school days, and with minor tinkering since now has a clean delivery with an unusually loose, quick, easy arm action—even as he will vary his delivery to give hitters a different look.
Durability has always been a primary concern for Heavey. He was a slender, immature 6-foot-1 and 150 pounds when he enrolled at Oklahoma State, but has since added 25 pounds to his lean, wiry frame. In the process, he has improved the velocity on his fastball from the mid- to high-80s to low-90s. But there are still concerns, even with natural maturity, that he’ll be strong enough to hold up to the demands of becoming a starter at the professional level.
Regardless, Heaney is viewed as a safe college lefty with solid stuff and competitiveness, and is the kind of pitcher that rarely slides very far in the draft.
