3/9/12: Right-handed pitcher Lucas Giolito and left-hander Max Fried at Harvard-Westlake High School in Southern California have garnered plenty of national attention as high school teammates who could both be selected in the first round in the upcoming June draft. But they aren’t the only two prep teammates who could share that honor. Outfielder Jesse Winker and right-handed pitcher Walker Weickel at Olympia High School on the west side of Orlando, Florida, could join them as first round teammates. Not surprisingly, especially since both Winker and Weickel are two-way standouts, Olympia has one of the top high school teams in the country and is currently ranked 16th in the Perfect Game National High School rankings. Winker and Weickel were also teammates this past year on the USA National 18U team that won the gold medal at the 2011 Junior Pan American Games tournament. Maybe as a break from each other, the two close friends don’t play on the same travel team, with Winker aligning with FTB Mizuno and Weickel competing for the rival Orlando Scorpions. The left handed hitting Winker has been acknowledged as one of the top power hitters in the 2012 class since his sophomore year, and was starting for Olympia as a freshman. He attended the Perfect Game Junior National Showcase in 2010 and was one of the few sophomores invited to compete in the East Coast Professional Showcase as well. At that point in his baseball development, Winker clearly had the strength, bat speed and natural hitting ability to be a top prospect offensively. But the rest of game was still at the growing stage, as Winker was a 7.5 runner with less than fluid outfield actions. Between the summer of 2010 and the summer of 2011, though, Winker grew tremendously as an athlete. He showed up for the 2011 Perfect Game National Showcase as a different type of player, running a 7.1 60 and showing fundamentally polished and athletic actions in the outfield on defense. The player who looked like a future left field/first base candidate now looked like an accomplished defensive right fielder with an impressive throwing arm. He was selected as a Perfect Game All-American because of that improvement and overall showing at that event. Winker’s development as an athlete also showed in the success he has had on the mound over the past six months. He rarely pitched either at Olympia or for FTB Mizuno, but with a shortage of pitching on the USA National 18U team Winker was pressed into duty on the mound. He responded by throwing a seven-inning shutout with only 66 pitches early in the championship, picked up a save later and was named the top pitcher at the Junior Pan Am Games. Ironically, teammate Weickel was the probable runner-up for that honor. Winker has been the closer for Olympia early this spring and was reportedly 90-93 mph with his fastball in a late February appearance. The improved athleticism and defense and his surprising success and raw stuff on the mound will definitely help Winker’s case with scouts, as will his reputation as one of the more outgoing and charismatic young men among the top 2012 prospects. But it will eventually be Winker’s power and consistency at the plate that will determine how high he is drafted. Nowhere was that hitting ability more apparent than at the 2011 WWBA World Championships in Jupiter, Florida, where FTB Mizuno put together an all All-American outfield of Winker, David Dahl and Albert Almora. Winker’s bat stood out even among his FTB Mizuno teammates, and he hit two home runs and led all players at the tournament in RBI. His bases loaded, two-out drive to right field late in Mizuno’s 5-3 semifinal loss would have changed the likely outcome of the tournament if it had carried 10 feet further.

Outstanding hitting tools, effortless swing with plus bat speed, very quick hands, sees ball extremely well and knows the strike zone, patient hitter who explodes at the ball, lift in his swing, creates backspin and ball really carries, very confident hitting approach. Has improved defense and athleticism tremendously over the past year, 7.10 runner, strong arm, very sound footwork, accurate throws with a quick release. Also pitched and threw 90 mph from the left side, quick compact arm, threw strikes. Excellent student, verbal commitment to Florida. Named to the Perfect Game All American Classic team.
