5/28/12: Crosscheckers had cause to flock to New England last year, with a trio of University of Connecticut players in OF George Springer, RHP Matt Barnes and SS Nick Ahmed eventually being picked in the top two rounds. Five separate high school pitchers in Massachusetts warranted crosschecking, including Blue Jays first round pick, right handed pitcher Tyler Beede, who eventually spurned Toronto for Vanderbilt. In fact, all five of the Massachusetts pitchers passed on pro ball to go to school. 2012 has been a much slower year talent-wise in the region, with only Rhett Wiseman, an outfielder at the exclusive Buckingham, Browne and Nichols High School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, being evaluated as an obvious high school crosscheck player in the area. Wiseman was one of the most ubiquitous players on the summer showcase circuit, appearing at the Perfect Game National Showcase, the East Coast Professional Showcase and the Area Code Games, along with being named a Perfect Game All-American and appearing in the Perfect Game All-American Classic. He also played in the WWBA 17U National Championships in July and the WWBA World Championships in October, probably the two most heavily scouted team events during the year. So scouts have had more than an ample chance to evaluate Wiseman despite his customarily short Northeast high school season. The extra strong and tightly wound 6-foot-1, 195-pound Wiseman stands out for his combination of speed and power potential, especially coming from a left handed hitter. He ran a 3.63 from the left side at the PG National Showcase, 4.07 on a ground ball at the Area Code Games and a hand timed 6.51 60 at the East Coast Pro Showcase, along with a laser timed 6.59 at the PG National. Interestingly, Wiseman only ran a 7.05 at the 2010 PG Northeast Top Prospect Showcase, an indication of how much he’s been able to improve his speed over a year’s time. If anything, Wiseman’s speed plays up in games. He’s a full-speed at all times, 100% hustle type of player who only knows one gear on the field. Wiseman’s left handed swing is strong and powerful with a bit of uppercut in his swing plane. Much like what is often talked about with pitchers, Wiseman has some effort in his swing that concerns scouts, but has shown both the ability to take pitches with patience and handle high velocity pitching. The ball explodes off Wiseman’s bat when he squares it up as hard as any high school hitter in the country. He slammed a no doubt home run off a 90 mph fastball at the PG National and also laced a clean single off the country’s top left handed pitching prospect, Max Fried, at the Area Code Games. Like Beede, Wiseman’s private school background and scholarship to Vanderbilt will make scouts have to be extra diligent in pursuing his signability. Under the old CBA, it would have been easy to speculate that the hometown Boston Red Sox (Buckingham, Browne and Nichols is four miles from Fenway Park) might have made a run at Wiseman if he fell out of the top signing rounds, but the new draft rules make that unlikely.

Rhett Wiseman is a 2012 OF with a 6-1 190 lb. frame from Mansfield, MA who attends Buckingham Browne & Nichols HS. Tightly wound athletic build, very good present strength. Excellent speed/power combination. 6.59 runner, flies around the bases, fun to watch run out a triple, 3.63 on a bunt from the left side, runs 100% at all times. Aggressive swing, quick and short to the ball with good loose extension out front, swings hard and attacks, ball jumps hard and loud, pull and lift approach, squares up good pitching, serious bat speed. Outfield actions/fundamentals still developing, speed for obvious range, arm strength playable, will improve in this area with additional instruction/repetitions. Good student, verbal commitment to Vanderbilt. Named to the Perfect Game All American Classic team.

Wiseman has an athletic build with some room to add strength, hits from an even stance, has all the tools to use, good bat speed, hits to all fields with pop, ball made different sound coming off his bat, has some current pull pop, makes adjustments during game, plays hard, defensively, good carry on throws, solid feet, solid actions, tracks ball well, he is also an excellent student, verbal to Vanderbilt.
