2006 Southeast Top Prospect Showcase
Cody Gooden is a 2007 RHP/OF with a 6'4'', 180 lb. frame from Sparks GA, who attends Cook HS. He has an excellent athletic body, with a wide frame and very good projectability. We understand that Gooden is a very good wide receiver and his game on Friday night before the showcase might have effected his performance Saturday and Sunday. Gooden has very fluid athletic actions on the baseball field. He ran the 60 in 6.83 and threw a very strong 89 mph from the outfield during drills. Gooden's swing is the only thing that doesn't seem to work for him athletically or he could be a premium outfield prospect. His swing is long to the ball and cut off out front and he needs a lot of work on his balance. On the mound, Gooden has very sound pitching mechanics, with a smooth delivery and arm action and good extension out front. His 72 mph curveball was a hammer, with very hard downer bite. Gooden only threw 79-81 mph on his fastball, though. One has to believe that he throws harder normally because of his outfield arm, size, arm action and curveball power/velocity, but maybe the football is effecting that part of his game at this time of year. We can't give Gooden a higher grade until we see the fastball, but it wouldn't surprise us a bit if it was there in both past and future. Keep a close eye on him. Gooden is also a good student.
