Anthony Almaraz is a 2007 SS/IF with a 5'7'', 150 lb. frame from Milpitas CA, who attends Milpitas HS. Almaraz has a compact body type and is quite strong for his size, and he is not done getting stronger. Almaraz had a nice showcase, playing well both offensively and defensively. His tools don't blow you away, but he has playability and usability of his tools. Almaraz is a contact line drive hitter. He displayed good bat control and a quick bat. His swing is short and he has good balance. Really, it is a simple, effective swing and will play well in the two-hole. He runs the bases well and competed like a gamer. Defensively he Almaraz playe well at each infield spot (2B, SS, 3B). He knows the game and looks like he has been coaches well. Almaraz played well on the move and showed good instincts, seemingly being in the right spot at the right time, all the time. He showed a solid arm, good feet, and positioned himself well. He is also an excellent relay man, with the proper footwork, body position, and quick release. His grades are likely to hold him back a bit at this time, but he is an excellent JC follow. The two years at that level will give his game a chance to become that much better while he continues to get stronger.
