2006 California Underclass
Nick Hammons is a 2007 3B/RHP/C from Snohomish HS, residing in Snohomish, WA, with a 6'0" 190 lb. frame. Hammons was named to the top prospect team at the California Underclass Showcase. Has a durable build; is both strong and thick. Offensively he showed loose and lively hands and got to decent extension through contact. He is short to the ball and during his swing he stays vertically stacked. Hammons has decent bat speed and hit with a pull side approach, showing some power potential. He has a good arm that tracks across the diamond. Hammons is a patient defender. He sees ball, sets up to it and makes the play. In his area he is a good defender, showing himself to be a solidly adequate 3B on defense. On the mound he is aggressive with the ball. Hammons has a strong arm and pitches from a high 3/4 slot. He spins off his front side a bit but is aggressive to the plate. His FB was up to 86 mph and he pitched up in the zone. His FB can ride a bit, up and in to RH hitters. Hammons impressively torqued the CB that had slurvy break. He showed very good feel for the change-up, suggesting that with a little more patience for the release point of hs FB he can have a lot of life at the plate. He put hitters on their heels because he was effectively wild with the FB. Hammons showed a decent FB/CH mix and the ability to pitch with two pitches, signs of a closer. He is a good follow as either a pitcher or a position player and should be followed by most West Coast D1 programs.
