2005 Spring Top Prospect
Ferguson is a senior first baseman/pitcher from Iowa with a big and well proportioned 6-5, 225 lb body. We probably like him more as a pitcher. Ferguson threw a couple of innings and showed the same type of ability that he’s been showing in the Spring League the past 2 seasons. He throws from a low ¾’s to side arm release point with a minimal effort delivery. Ferguson is a strike machine who rarely gets behind in a count or walks a hitter. His fastball gets consistent sinking action from that release point at 76-78 mph. Ferguson will vary the speed and break on his breaking ball between 62 and 68 mph and his go to pitch is often a low 60’s knuckleball that is half change up, half knuckler. He’s the type of pitcher you can take a comfortable 0-4 off of and end up leaving the park early. As a hitter, Ferguson hits out of an upright stance at the plate with a slashing swing. He made good contact in batting practice and showed some power on a couple of swings, although he doesn’t have the type of swing that’s going to loft the ball often. Ferguson is a good student who enjoys playing the game.
