Cobb is a slender and very projectable 6-1, 175 lb left handed pitcher/first baseman from Texas. He throws from a long, slinging arm action and a mid 3/4's release point. Cobb was 77-79 mph on his fastball during four very effective innings of work in Waco. We understand that he's topped out at 84 mph in the past but that he started football weight lifting early in the summer and his velocity has understandably dropped since. Cobb's fastball had nice tailing action when he turned it over. His 62-63 mph curveball had good spin and bite when he kept it down in the strike zone and should improve with velocity. Cobb also threw a pretty good 68 mph change up and threw strikes with all three pitches. Cobb also showed some potential as a hitter and was named to the All Prospect team as a first baseman. He hits from a high hand approach with a level line drive swing and very good balance through contact. Cobb went 5-6 during the two showcase games, then came back and got another hit during the Prospect Game as well. He showed the ability to both turn on the ball and to go the other way. His power should start developing as he adds more strength. Good 2-way potential, especially if he is throwing in the mid-80's next spring. Cobb is also an outstanding student.
