Johnson is a 6-1, 170 lb second baseman from Kansas and a member of the 2007 class. He ran the 60 in 7.57 and threw 73 mph during infield drills. Johnson’s hands worked well on defense and his arm strength in the field will improve significantly with better throwing mechanics, as he showed very nice arm strength later on the mound. It’s hard to project where Johnson will end up on defense at this point. Johnson’s best tool right now is his bat. He has quick, strong hands and very good bat speed. Johnson likes the ball middle in and attacks it aggressively and can really drive the ball with power. When he fills out his frame and learns to hit the ball to all fields, Johnson could develop into a top level hitter with serious power. Johnson also pitched an inning, showing good arm strength from a smooth low ¾’s release point. He topped out at 84 mph with a 68 mph curveball. Very good follow!
