RHP/SS Travis Sweet: Sweet’s control was a little off, perhaps the result of large crowd of scouts in the stands, but he pitched in the 88-89 mph range with his usual abusive curveball in the mid-70’s. He doesn’t look like a very comfortable pitcher to hit off at all. Sweet also continued his emergence as a legit position prospect. He ran 6.77 on the wet track, the second fastest time at the event, and took an excellent batting practice, showing the best power we’ve seen from him thus far. Sweet’s tools play high and he’s an intense competitor. He’s signed with Iowa.

RHP Travis Sweet: Sweet followed up his very impressive showing at the Indoor Showcase in late February with more strong performances during the Spring League games. His fastball has consistently been in the 86-89 mph range and his 76-78 mph slider has been unhittable at times. Sweet pitches aggressively with his breaking ball and when he’s tuned into the strike zone, he has a lot of quick innings and piles up the strikeouts as fast as the Spring League’s other top hurler, Jeremy Hellickson. At the Spring Showcase, Sweet topped out at 90 mph with his usual sharp breaking ball. One thing that really impressed us about Sweet at the Spring Showcase, though, had nothing to do with pitching. This kid could be a top level shortstop prospect as well! He ran a 6.69 60 to show us his speed and handled every ground ball with smoothness and confidence. You know Sweet has the arm for the position when he touches 92 mph from the mound. Sweet has signed with the University of Iowa and we don’t know if they know what a good position prospect they might have on their hands as well. Although he’s only 5-10, the professional scouts have to pay attention to this athlete, too.

Travis Sweet: Simply put, Sweet was the star of the Showcase. This 5-10 senior right hander lives in Cedar Rapids and is a familiar face at the PG facilities but the display he put on was not familiar. Sweet has played very well at a number of events and was named to the All-Tournament Team last year in Jupiter as much for his hitting as his pitching. It was his pitching this time. Sweet faced 10 hitters and struck all 10 of them out with one foul tip being the only contact. He was up to 92 mph on the gun and pitched consistently in the 88-90 mph range on the Stalker. Sweet’s easy and balanced pitching mechanics enable him to spot all his pitches in the strike zone where he wants them and he was doing that with every hitter. Sweet’s strikeout pitch was a hammer of a 74-76 mph curveball that had very sharp break to it with well above average command. Sweet even threw some nice hi-70’s change ups. He has an extremely fast arm. Sweet has signed to go to Iowa and could be a real coup for 1st year coach Jack Dahm’s program at that school. Travis is a very good student and if he were 3 or 4 inches taller we'd be predicting early draft.

Sweet is an "04" RHP/INF from Cedar Rapids. At 5'10/170 he has a strong athletic build. We've seen him many times over the years as he's always been an excellent player and athlete. Over the last couple years his arm has become the major feature to his game. In CR he was touching 90 mph with consistent high 80 readings. His curveball around 74 mph is a quality pitch. He also showed a real good 79 mph slider. Travis is a very good all around player and not just a pitcher. With his ability on the mound he's going to pitch in college. If he were a few inches taller he would be a good draft pick. Travis is a very good student.
