5/4/12: It’s just about a given that Carlos Correa will establish a new high point in the draft for Puerto Ricans. The power hitting shortstop should be selected within the top 5-to-6 picks and is even a sleeper to go first overall. The current holder of that distinction is catcher Ramon Castro, who was the Astros first round pick, 17th overall, in 1994. However, there is also a chance that this year’s Puerto Rican class will provide the highest drafted pitcher ever from the island. In fact, there are two young right handers who could claim that distinction, Jose Orlando (J.O.) Berrios and Edwin Diaz. Right handed pitcher Luis Atilano was the 35th pick in the 2003 draft by the Atlanta Braves and is presently the highest drafted Puerto Rican pitcher. Atilano started 16 games (6-7, 5.15) for the 2010 Washington Nationals before injuring his arm and is now trying to re-establish himself in the minors with the Cincinnati Reds. Most scouts have Berrios with a slim lead over Diaz in the prospect standings a month before the draft, although both were outstanding in front of large crowds of scouts recently at the Excellence Games in Caguas, Puerto Rico. They are two very different pitchers, however. Berrios has a very broad shouldered 6-foot-1, 190-pound build with long arms and good overall athleticism. He has gained significant strength over the past year and is fairly physically mature with limited future projection in his raw stuff. Unlike many smaller right handers, Berrios throws from a low effort delivery with simple turn and throw mechanics, a clean and quick arm action that hides the ball well from hitters and an extended three-quarters release point. He will occasionally struggle to get his front side fully open, which hinders his ability to work to his glove side of the plate, but his mechanics are some of the cleanest of all the top prospect pitchers in the 2012 draft class. Berrios has a complete assortment of pitches, probably more than most scouts have seen. His fastball sits in the 92-94 mph range and topped out at 95-96 mph at the Excellence Games. Berrios has shown the ability to get his fastball consistently down in the strike zone with some run and sink and when his mechanics are working will come inside to both right handed and left handed hitters. Interestingly, scouts have noted that Berrios consistently throws 1-2 mph harder when he’s pitching in Puerto Rico than when he’s pitching in the United States. Both Berrios' curveball and change have the potential to be plus pitches and he has the present ability to use both in good sequence with his fastball. His low-80s changeup gets very good sinking life at times and will be a major weapon against left handed hitters, although Berrios tends to drop his arm slot a bit on the pitch at times. His curveball is a hard 79-81 mph offering that is frequently called a slider due to its velocity. Just like his changeup, Berrios is inconsistent on the release, occasionally getting on the side of the ball, but creates hard downer spin and bite when on top. Berrios has also shown a couple of other pitches at Perfect Game events. He can throw a low-70s curveball that has a big, lazy break strictly as an early in the count get-it-over pitch. More interestingly, he has thrown an 87 mph cutter a couple of times that shows promise of developing into a solid fourth pitch at the professional level.

Kelly Green vs. Crimson Highlights
Jose Orlando Berrios is a 2012 RHP with a 6-1 187 lb. frame from Bayamon, PR who attends Juan XXlll HS. Broad shouldered medium athletic build, room to get a bit stronger. Simple step back delivery, easy relaxed pace with some back turn, low effort 3/4's release. Power fastball, lots of 93's, consistent velocity, some running action down, had trouble getting fastball to glove side, especially to LHH'ers. Throws two breaking balls, consistently on side of 79 mph slurve, tends to flatten out, also threw big breaking slow curve at 70 mph with downer shape. Flashed plus change action, good arm speed but tends to lower slot on release. Velocity comes easily, have seen better secondary pitches/command from him.

Gray vs. Green
Jose Orlando Berrios is a 2012 RHP/SS with a 6-1 178 lb. frame from Bayamon, PR who attends Juan XXlll HS. Medium athletic build. Standard leg tuck delivery, high 3/4's release point, gets downhill, arm is smooth and quick, ball comes out of his hand easy with low effort. Steady low 90's fastball, topped at 93 mph, mostly straight from regular release point. Will drop down low 3/4's with same velocity for running action or cut fastball at 87 occasionally. Flashes plus spin on mid-70's curveball, good bite with hard downer action, tends to cut curveball out front at times. Rare change up. Throws strikes, especially with his curveball, and will come inside aggressively to right handed hitters. Quality arm with a feel for pitching.
