Anthony Shawler is a 6'2", 180 lb. catcher/pitcher from Chesapeake, Virginia, with 6.93 sixty speed, a power arm, and pro level bat. He might be one of the top 10 catchers in the country. Anthony was one of the top prospects at the event at two positions. Pro scouts are split between Anthony being a catcher or right handed pitcher. He showed 1.90-1.98 pop times with very good pro level (84 mph) velocity. He can throw 1.95's from his knees and will shut down a running game. He is a fast twitch athlete with good footwork and very low throws to second base. His throws carry through the bag and would hit the OF grass if not caught. On the mound Anthony showed an 88 mph fastball, and a 79 mph power slurve. His slurve has occasional knee bending type explosive break at the plate that freezes most batters. Anthony has a simple delivery with pro level arm speed and online stride. We have seen his fastball at 92 mph earlier this year. He's a right handed hitter with a very quick bat and a balanced swing with the ability to hit with power to all fields. He hits from a tall stance with a knee lift trigger. Shawler has plus strength with fast twitch muscles that can hit upper velocity pitching. Anthony is still projectable and has the potential to be a good draft pick.

Top Prospect at event. Anthony will get a lot of pro scout traffic this spring. With his Pro level power and bat, Coaches and Scouts are already torn between whether he should go on the mound or behind the dish. A primary catcher for the last two years, just recently began to pitch again and shows a 91 fb with very quick arm speed and a 73 hammer type cb with 11 to 5 tilt. Shows a slow rolling type 84 mph change. A live arm with a developing strong athletic 6'2-185 frame A R/R priamry catcher with 1.89 pop and 86(c) velocity from behind the plate. He shows very quick transfers and ability to throw 1.9 from his knees. A threat to pick guys at any base, he adds the ability to shut down a running game. At the plate he shows pro level power with a very short quick bat. He has very strong hands and can swing the wood. Pro level bat speed and big time power projection. We will let the scouts and coaches determine where they will play Anthony, but he will get a lot of pro socut traffic this spring.

Anthony is a medium built 6-0/170 lb. "junior" catcher with a nice frame from Chesapeake, Virginia. He has a very strong arm that is quick and loose with outstanding 81 mph velocity. He shows very quick feet and hands with good transfer/releases from a solid setup. He receives well with soft hands and the ability to handle high velocity pitchers. His pop times were 1.92 to 2.00 but will get much better yet in the future. He is a right handed hitter with strong hands and gap power. He has a high hand setup with a short, quick path to the ball with a gap-to-gap approach. This one is a top prospect who can catch, throw, hit and run. He is a 2005 prospect we will be watching closely this year as he developes. He could become a very special player. Anthony is a good student.

Shawler is relatively new to catching, having just picked it up in the last year, and it looks like a good move for him. He’s a good athlete who moves well behind the plate and shows close to average big league arm strength right now. Better footwork will get his pop times down from the 2.06 – 2.08 times he was registering in Chapel Hill. What we like most about Shawler’s ability, though, is his offensive potential. He has a good, short swing with wood and hits the ball hard with some loft in his swing. Every college coach in the country is looking for a catcher who has some pop in his bat and if Shawler can keep improving defensively over the next two years, he’s got a shot to be one of those guys. Only an "05" he could end up being a highly recruited catcher over the next couple years.
