Matt Blow is a 6'6", 195 lb. athlete from Richmond, Virginia, with an outstanding athletic body. Watching him play at Duke was a good lesson for both other young players and for scouts who watch young players. Blow listed himself as a primary right handed pitcher and if you scouted him just as that, you didn’t appreciate his athletic ability. Blow threw 78-80 off the mound with a stiff, abbreviated arm action, and a flat 70 mph slurve that he dropped his release point on. We later found out that Blow had just returned from a national tournament where he had thrown a lot of innings. Blow also didn’t do much during workouts on the first day, so it was even easier to write him off. However, on the second day, Blow was one of the top two or three hitters at the event, and was able to show off his true athleticism in the infield during games. He kept trying hard, the PG scouts kept watching him and we think we got a true evaluation. Blow is a left handed hitter who generates very good bat speed with a very balanced and short approach to the ball, especially for his size. He pulled some balls hard where the ball really jumped off his bat with authority. While Blow doesn’t project as a shortstop, he got to play the position enough to show his feet and hands work well and he has some athletic hop and balance. Overall, Blow is a very intriguing athlete who still has to define his best position and skills, but has a high ceiling potentially.
