Dern is a 5-7 junior catcher from New York with square shoulders and good present strength throughout his body. Dern’s offensive approach is very polished and sound. He gets out on his front side early but has the hand strength to stay short and quick to the ball with some bat speed. Dern will hit the ball where it’s pitched and looks like he’s a high average type of hitter with a high percentage of hard contacts and few strikeouts. He hit a number of balls hard right at defenders in the showcase games. Defensively, Dern showed some arm strength and good, consistent transfers on his throws. He still needs some work on receiving the ball on the pitchers with better stuff but that might come with more experience.

Marc Dern is a 2006 catcher from Valley Stream, New York, with a 5'7", 170 lb. frame. Dern was a sound all around player. Defensively he showed a very respectable 2.12 pop time with solid accuracy on the 2B side of the bag with good carry. His feet were quick, and he showed good athleticism, but he needs to work on his transfers as they were slow and caused him to be off balance at times when throwing. Dern has soft hands and receives the ball fairly well, and made a couple of good blocks during the game. At the plate, Dern hit out of open stance, and flashed some very good bat speed. He showed good gap power, and sprayed the ball all over the field. We feel that Marc will be a good catcher at the next level, and he might try to play the infield as a secondary position giving him some versatility. Dern is a solid 2006 player.
