Lance McClain is a lean slender 6'0/160 LHP from Knoxville, TN. He showed a very deliberate slow delivery and he's fairly deceptive. His fastball sat in the mid 80s and he showed a very nice changeup. His breaking ball in the low 70s was used more to mix things up that an out pitch. He really hits his spots well and has a good feel for the mound. Lance is a good athlete who can run very well (4 flat H-1) and hit. In fact, he hit the ball very well in Tropicana Field. He can pitch and maybe even play a position at a high level DI school. He projects to get much bigger and stronger. Lance is a good student.

Lance McClain -- McClain is an extremely polished and savvy left hander who could probably pitch at a higher level right now on any given day. He has a slender frame with loose, coordinated actions and a very balanced, easy delivery. The key part of McClain’s game is that he can pretty much throw the ball wherever he wants to. His fastball was in the 82-84 mph for us with some sink and tail on it, but we think that McClain will both throw harder and improve the movement on his fastball in the future. He threw a curveball with solid 2-plane break to it and showed the ability to vary the break and speed on it. Like most left handers with very balanced deliveries, McClain has a deadly pickoff move, too. One thing that we didn’t see that’s usually a major weapon with McClain-style lefties was a change up. Maybe that was a temporary omission on McClain’s part but it shouldn’t be very difficult for him to learn given his mechanics and command. High level Prospect!
