LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2004 National Underclass Dec 28-30
LaFavers is a big and strong sophomore pitching prospect from Florida who also did some catching at the showcase. His present skills and tools are solid. LaFavers struck out 10 hitters in 4 innings of work from the mound, using 4 different pitches effectively and with a bulldog type approach. His regular fastball was usually 80-81 mph and topped out at 83. LaFavers also threw a low ¾’s fastball that had some sinking action at 73-76 mph. His strikeout pitch was a 65-68 mph curveball that had good sharpness. He also threw a sinking 72 mph change up from his regular release point. LaFavers has a rotational delivery and a fairly stiff front landing side. Offensively, LaFavers has an open stance with very little lower half involvement in his swing, but he’s strong enough to overcome that and generate some bat speed with wood. LaFavers had three game hits and did a nice job of both showing his power and keeping his swing short and controlled. It looks like he’s a solid hitter at this level. His lack of running speed and lower body life will limit his defensive options as the game speeds up. LaFavers is a good student.
