5/7/12: Butler was part of a dominant pitching staff last summer at Harwich of the Cape Cod League that included the likes of Kevin Gausman (Louisiana State), Pierce Johnson (Missouri State) and Chris Stratton (Mississippi State), all righthanders projected to go in the first round of this year’s draft.
Not surprisingly, that staff led Harwich to a league title, and Butler actually played a more-vital role in the team’s success than any of the three more-acclaimed arms did. He played a vital role for the Mariners as part of a dominant mid-90s, end-of-game triumvirate in post-season play after dividing his time between starting and relieving during the regular season.
Butler’s fastball peaked at 97 mph in a short role, and was a customary 93-95 much of the rest of the season. He went 2-0, 1.86 for Harwich in the playoffs, after going just 1-2, 5.22 with 11 walks and 21 strikeouts in 29 innings during the regular season as he often tried unsuccessfully to blow his big fastball by every hitter on the Cape. In the process, he struggled initially in adjusting to a relief role after being used exclusively as a starter as both a freshman (6-4, 5.36, 86 IP, 34 BB/65 SO) and sophomore (9-2, 4.15, 95 IP, 27 BB/72 SO) at Radford. He set a school record with his nine wins a year ago.
Butler has continued to work as a starter this season as a junior for the Highlanders, and has enjoyed easily his best season to date in going 5-3, 1.94 in his first 11 starts, while walking 21 and striking out a team-high 74 in 79 innings. He has limited opponents to a .205 batting average.
His success this season as a starter notwithstanding, a majority of scouts believe Butler is best served in the long run at pitching in relief, in either a set-up or closer role. He is not overly physical at 6-foot-2 and 165 pounds, but has a very live body and quick arm, and his aggressive demeanor is ideal with a game on the line. Butler is also essentially a two-pitch pitcher as he rarely uses his changeup. He has demonstrated a good feel for spinning a breaking ball and his slider has become a nice complement to his overpowering fastball.
As he embarks on the next stage of his blossoming career, Butler will just need to continue to work on developing some of the finer points of pitching, such as moving the ball around the strike zone with purpose and utilizing his off-speed stuff more efficiently.
