Johnny Gunter is an '06 catcher from Phenix City, Alabama with a strong, very projectable catcher's body. Behind the dish he shows solid skills. He receives well with good balance, quick transfers, loose actions and a good setup. His throws are impressive. All five throws were "on the money" - no tag necessary. He creates backspin with his throws with a 1.88 POP and 79mph arm. At the plate he hits from a medium base and open stance into a long stride. He shows a linear hitting style with weight transfer to his front side. He shows lift in his swing plane with a fast bat that has medium length to it. He has a short load and quick approach. Flashes pull side power. He has a great body and an excellent arm that will make him a top prospect, with good draft potential in 2006.
